Alexis Arapoff
Alexis Paul Arapoff (né Alexei Alexeyevich Arapov; ; 6 December 1904 – 25 September 1948) was a White émigré Russian-born painter, first based in France in 1923, where he belonged to the École de Paris, and later in Boston, Massachusetts, where he relocated in 1930. Biography Born into an Orthodox noble family (Arapov) in Saint Peterburg, Russia, Alexis flew to Germany in 1917 to escape the revolution. When he came back to Russia in 1921, he was admitted to the Saratov Art Institute. In 1923, he went to Moscow, where he became a furniture designer in a workers' palace. Following this, he created suits and scenes for the "avant-garde" theater of Russian choreographer Nikolai Foregger. Later he worked for the "False Mirror Theatre" of Nikolai Evreinov, and followed the theater trip to Paris in 1925. Alexei Arapov
Alexei Nazarovich Arapov (14 March 1906 – 14 September 1943) was a Soviet officer, chief of staff of the 3rd Guards Airborne Division, and a Hero of the Soviet Union. Arapov was awarded the title posthumously for his leadership during the Battle of the Dnieper. Drafted into the Red Army in 1928, Arapov became an officer and graduated from the Frunze Military Academy soon after the beginning of the German invasion of the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941. Serving as a staff officer in the 50th Army during the Battle of Moscow, Arapov distinguished himself and when the 8th Airborne Corps was formed in the fall of 1942, he became its chief of staff. The corps was soon converted into the 3rd Guards Airborne Division, and Arapov stayed on as chief of staff for the new division. Killed in a German air raid during the Battle of the Dnieper, he was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for his actions. Boris Arapov
Boris Aleksandrovich Arapov (; 12 September 1905 in Saint Petersburg – 27 January 1992 in Saint Petersburg) was a Soviet and Russian composer. People's Artist of the RSFSR (1976). Life and career Arapov grew up in Poltava, Ukraine, and took his first musical instruction class there. He moved to Petrograd (formerly Saint Petersburg) in 1921, and took piano lessons with Maria Yudina. However, a hand disease later forced him to abandon piano playing. His instruction class in composition started in 1923 at the Leningrad Conservatory, where he was taught by, amongst others, Vladimir Shcherbachov. He later became a teacher at the conservatory, and a professor in 1940. In 1951, he became the director of the faculty for orchestration and the faculty of composition in 1976. He received titles of People's Artist of the RSFSR (1976) and Order of Lenin (1986). His students included the Georgian composer Dagmara Slianova-Mizandari.
