Arabic Numerals
The ten Arabic numerals (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9) are the most commonly used symbols for writing numbers. The term often also implies a positional notation number with a decimal base, in particular when contrasted with Roman numerals. However the symbols are also used to write numbers in other bases, such as octal, as well as non-numerical information such as trademarks or license plate identifiers. They are also called Western Arabic numerals, Western digits, European digits, Ghubār numerals, or Hindu–Arabic numerals due to positional notation (but not these digits) originating in India. The ''Oxford English Dictionary'' uses lowercase ''Arabic numerals'' while using the fully capitalized term ''Arabic Numerals'' for Eastern Arabic numerals. In contemporary society, the terms ''digits'', ''numbers'', and ''numerals'' often implies only these symbols, although it can only be inferred from context. History Of The Hindu–Arabic Numeral System
The Hindu–Arabic numeral system is a decimal place-value numeral system that uses a zero glyph as in "205". Its glyphs are descended from the Indian Brahmi numerals. The full system emerged by the 8th to 9th centuries, and is first described outside India in Al-Khwarizmi's ''On the Calculation with Hindu Numerals'' (ca. 825), and second Al-Kindi's four-volume work ''On the Use of the Indian Numerals'' (ca. 830). Today the name ''Hindu–Arabic numerals'' is usually used. Decimal system Historians trace modern numerals in most languages to the Brahmi numerals, which were in use around the middle of the 3rd century BC. The place value system, however, developed later. Numerical Digit
A numerical digit (often shortened to just digit) or numeral is a single symbol used alone (such as "1"), or in combinations (such as "15"), to represent numbers in positional notation, such as the common base 10. The name "digit" originates from the Latin ''digiti'' meaning fingers. For any numeral system with an integer base, the number of different digits required is the absolute value of the base. For example, decimal (base 10) requires ten digits (0 to 9), and binary (base 2) requires only two digits (0 and 1). Bases greater than 10 require more than 10 digits, for instance hexadecimal (base 16) requires 16 digits (usually 0 to 9 and A to F). Abu'l-Hasan Al-Uqlidisi
Abū al-Ḥassan, Aḥmad Ibn Ibrāhīm, al-Uqlīdisī (, ) was a Muslim Arab mathematician of the Islamic Golden Age, possibly from Damascus, who wrote the earliest surviving book on the use of decimal fractions with Hindu–Arabic numerals, ''Kitāb al-Fuṣūl fī al-Ḥisāb al-Hindī'' (''The Book of Chapters on Hindu Arithmetic''), in Arabic in 952. Alī Ibn Ahmad Al-Nasawī
Alī ibn Aḥmad al-Nasawī (; c. 1011 possibly in Khurasan – c. 1075 in Baghdad) was a Persian mathematician from Khurasan, Iran. He flourished under the Buwayhid sultan Majd al-dowleh, who died in 1029-30AD, and under his successor. He wrote a book on arithmetic in Persian, and then Arabic, entitled the "Satisfying (or Convincing) on Hindu Calculation" (''al-muqni fi-l-hisab al Hindi''). He also wrote on Archimedes's '' Book of Lemmas'' and Menelaus's theorem (''Kitab al-ishba'', or "satiation"), where he made corrections to the ''Book of Lemmas'' as translated into Arabic by Thabit ibn Qurra and last revised by Nasir al-Din al-Tusi.
