Rugby Union In The Czech Republic
Rugby union in the Czech Republic is a growing sport. As of 1 November 2010, they are currently ranked thirty-first in the International Rugby Board's world rankings. Traditionally, Czech rugby has centred on a "section of the middle class" in and around Prague, which has been fairly small but fairly loyal to the sport.Bath, Richard (ed.) ''The Complete Book of Rugby'' (Seven Oaks Ltd, 1997 ) p66 The Czech Republic has also been popular with touring sides, because of its relatively low beer prices, and historic surroundings. Governing body Czechoslovakia was a founder member of FIRA in 1934, and joined the IRB in 1988. Rugby union in the Czech Republic is governed by a national body called the Česká Rugbyová Unie (ČSRU). The president of the ČSRU is Pavel Telička.Official IRB Cz ...

RC Říčany
RC Říčany (known as RC Mountfield Říčany for sponsorship reasons) is a Czech rugby club based in Říčany. They currently play in the Extraliga ragby XV. Since 2009 they also compete in the Central & Eastern European Rugby Cup along with fellow Czechs Dragon Brno. History RC Říčany was founded in 1944 by Josef Kohout, after which the club's home ground is named. The club had a tough start, as World War II was still pretty much in full force. People were living in fear for the Gestapo or being sent to work in Germany. Initially, they played only friendly matches, including a match against an Anglo-American forces side in 1946. 1952 saw the temporary cessation of rugby activity, owing to the lack of skilled players and competent officials, problems with the playing field and financial struggles. In 1956 the club restarted again, with more focus on developing home-grown players, and with Josef Kohout still a major driving force behind the club. The club celebrated ...

Czech Republic National Rugby League Team
The Czech Republic national rugby league team was established to broaden the skills of the rugby union team. The team has competed in a number of competitions and hosted the Slavic Cup in 2006. History The Czech Association of Rugby League (CZARL) began life in early 2006, under the guidance of former Czech rugby union international Milan Mrtýnek and Englishman Iain Sellers. The squad's first training session, in February 2006, was held in an indoor basketball hall because of an extremely fierce Czech winter. From these modest beginnings, the Czech Republic team, with support from the Rugby League European Federation, struggled to play four full games in their debut season. Perhaps inevitably, given the unfamiliarity of the game, the Czech Republic lost all four matches, and the margins of defeat were not narrow. The Czechs played their first two games against the touring British Student Pioneers team. A 29–2 loss in Prague was followed by a less encouraging 34–2 defeat in ...
