Animal Justice (organization)
Animal Justice is a Canadian nonprofit organization with three main areas of focus: lobbying for stronger animal protection laws, improved enforcement of those laws, and fighting for animals in court. It is Canada’s only national organization dedicated to advancing the interests of animals in the law. The organization makes submissions in court to obtain Intervention (law)#Canada, intervenor status and provide the perspective of animals. The organization was founded in 2008 and is led by animal rights lawyer Camille Labchuk. Cases and campaigns Papanack Park Zoo investigation In 2017, Animal Justice released undercover footage taken by a whistleblower who worked on the grounds of Papanack Park Zoo near Ottawa, Ontario. The zoo was investigated but no charges were laid. Intervention (law)
In law, intervention is a procedure to allow a nonparty, called intervenor (also spelled intervener) to join ongoing litigation, either as a matter of right or at the discretion of the court, without the permission of the original litigants. The basic rationale for intervention is that a judgment in a particular case may affect the rights of nonparties, who ideally should have the right to be heard. Canada Intervenors are most common in appellate proceedings but can also appear at other types of legal proceeding such as a trial. In general, it is within the discretion of the court to allow or refuse an application to intervene. There are exceptions to that, however. Papanack Park Zoo
The Papanack Park Zoo is a small zoo in Wendover, Ontario, Canada. It opened in 1994 and came under new ownership in 2014 with the intention of acting as a conservation park. It has 36 different species, including snow monkeys, cougars, snow leopard and white lion cubs. These cubs are the offspring of the zoo's African lions although they did not stay white as they grew. It also has four white Bengal tigers including a "snowball" tiger named Venus. The zoo is approximately a 25-minute drive from Canada's capital, Ottawa. A number of animals at the zoo have been shown in the children's series, ''Zoboomafoo'', with Chris Kratt and Martin Kratt. The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) is a non-profit animal welfare organization which advocates for animal protection legislation, operates animal shelters, and runs educational workshops and public awareness programs throughout British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1896, it is a registered charitable organization and one of the largest such animal welfare organizations in North America. As of 2017, BC SPCA had 36 branches, over 500 staff members, nearly 5500 volunteers, operated 5 veterinary hospitals/clinics and a wildlife rehabilitation centre, and sheltered more than 22000 animals. Ag-gag laws (agricultural gag) are anti-whistleblower laws that apply within the animal agriculture industry. Peter Albert David Singer (born 6 July 1946) is an Australian moral philosopher who is Emeritus Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University. Singer's work specialises in applied ethics, approaching the subject from a secular, utilitarian perspective. Canada has been considered to have weak animal welfare protections by the organization World Animal Protection.
