Ríkisútvarpið (, ; abbr. RÚV ) is Iceland's national public broadcasting, public-service broadcasting organization. Founded in 1930, it operates from studios in the country's capital, Reykjavík, as well as regional centres around the country. Gettu Betur
''Gettu betur'' () is an Icelandic team quiz show, broadcast on public television channel RÚV. Each team consists of three students from one of Iceland's high schools or colleges. Two teams play against each other in each episode. Two preliminary rounds are broadcast on radio station Rás 2, followed by televised quarter-final, semi-final and final rounds on ''RÚV''. Thirty schools participated in the 2011 season. The current host is Kristinn Óli S. Haraldsson. ''Gettu betur'' was first held in 1986. Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík has won the contest 20 times overall, first in 1988, and then eleven times in a row, from 1993 to 2003, from 2007 to 2010 and in 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016. The only other schools to win more than once are Menntaskólinn á Akureyri, with three wins and Kvennaskólinn í Reykjavík with two. Áramótaskaupið
''Áramótaskaupið'' ("The New Year's Lampoon") is an annual Icelandic television comedy special, broadcast on New Year's Eve by the state public service broadcaster RÚV. Initially aired on radio in 1948, and later moving to television in 1966, it features sketches satirizing the news events of the past year. It is often the highest-rated television broadcast of the year in Iceland. In 2002, it was reported that the special had been seen by 95.5% of the country; Páll Magnússon, CEO of RÚV stated that this was most likely a record in the Western world. Due to its high viewership, advertising time during ''Áramótaskaupið'' is the most expensive on Icelandic television. The show ends just before midnight, and those Icelanders who shoot off fireworks usually do so after ''Áramótaskaupið'' ends. The Edda Award is an accolade bestowed annually by the Icelandic Film and Television Academy, and is the most prominent film and television award in Iceland, awarded annually in February.
