André Parizeau
The Communist Party of Quebec (, , PCQ-PCC) is a provincial political party in Quebec. It is affiliated with, but officially independent from, the Communist Party of Canada (CPC). The PCQ-PCC publishes the newspaper ''Clarté''. Communists have run in elections in Quebec since 1936. The CPC was banned in 1941 and its branch in Quebec was consequently renamed the Parti ouvrier-progressiste (Labor-Progressive Party), and the Labor-Progressive Party federally. The party restored its original name in English and French in 1959. In 1965, CPC members in Quebec established the Parti communiste du Québec. Sam Walsh was secretary of the Quebec wing of the Communist Party of Canada from 1962 to 1965 and leader of the Quebec party from 1965 to 1990. Canadian League For Peace And Democracy
The Canadian League for Peace and Democracy, founded in October 1934 as the Canadian League Against War and Fascism, was an anti-fascist mass organization chaired by A. A. MacLeod and allied with the Communist Party of Canada. It gained prominence as a leading organizer of opposition within Canada to Nazi Germany following Hitler's rise to power and as an opponent of fascist groups organizing within Canada in the years leading up to World War II. It was dissolved in 1940 following the implementation of the '' Defence of Canada Regulations''. Viger Square
Viger Square (officially in ) is an urban square in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It was greatly changed by the construction of the Ville-Marie Expressway in the 1970s. The square is divided into three sections. It is bordered to the west by Saint Denis Street, to the east by Saint André Street, to the north by Viger Street, and to the south by Saint Antoine Street. History In the 1840s, the city of Montreal acquired several parcels of marshland permitting for its development. Trees were planted and pathways were traced. Prior to 1851, a hay market and public scale operated on the site on the east side of Saint Denis Street. The hay market moved a few times on the site, but was always to the east. Viger Square was inaugurated on September 11, 1860. In 1865, greenhouses were added, although were moved to La Fontaine Park in 1889. Maisonneuve (federal Electoral District)
Maisonneuve () was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1896 to 1935. A "Maisonneuve" riding also existed from 1966 to 1970 when it renamed " Maisonneuve—Rosemont", and from 1976 to 1978 when it was renamed " Hochelaga—Maisonneuve". The Great Depression was a severe global economic downturn from 1929 to 1939. William Kashtan
William Kashtan (27 June 1909 – 1993) was the general secretary of the Communist Party of Canada for 23 years beginning in January 1965, several months following the death of Leslie Morris, until his retirement in 1988. The delay in his assuming of the position was due to the opposition of Tim Buck to his appointment. Life and career Kashtan was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1909. In 1927, at the age of 18, he joined the Young Communist League. Two years later, he moved to southern Ontario to organize for the YCL there and then became the League's general secretary in 1930. In 1936, he helped found the Canadian Youth Congress which, at its peak, had over 400,000 members. He visited Spain early in the Spanish Civil War and on his return helped organize the Mackenzie–Papineau Battalion. Pioneer Movement
A pioneer movement is an youth organization, organization for children operated by a communist party. Typically children enter into the organization in elementary school and continue until adolescence. The adolescents then typically join the Young Communist League.
