André Léveillé
André Léveillé (August 11, 1933 – January 18, 2017) was a Canadian politician in Quebec. Background He was born on August 11, 1933, in Montreal and was an accountant by profession. Member of the legislature Léveillé won a seat to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec in 1966 in the district of Maisonneuve and was a member of the Union Nationale. He served as the government's Deputy Whip from 1966 to 1968. The Parti Québécois (PQ; , ) is a sovereignist and social democratic provincial political party in Quebec, Canada. Louise Harel
Louise Harel ( ; born April 22, 1946) is a Quebec politician. In 2005 she served as interim leader of the Parti Québécois following the resignation of Bernard Landry. She was also interim leader of the opposition in the National Assembly of Quebec. She represented the riding of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve in the Montreal region, and its predecessors, from 1981 to 2008. She ran for Mayor of Montreal as the representative of the Vision Montreal municipal political party in the 2009 election, but was defeated by incumbent Gérald Tremblay. In the 2013 Montreal election, Harel supported federalist Marcel Côté for mayor but failed to be elected to her own council seat. Union Nationale Leadership Elections
This page lists the results of leadership elections held by the Union Nationale. Before 1961 leaders were chosen by the caucus. Leadership 1936-1961 The Union Nationale (UN) was formed at a caucus of Conservative Party of Quebec and Action libérale nationale MLAs on June 20, 1936. Conservative leader Maurice Duplessis was chosen leader of this new party. Duplessis led the party until his death on September 7, 1959. On September 10 the caucus elected Paul Sauvé as leader and became premier the following day. Sauve in turn died on January 2, 1960. Antonio Barrette was elected by the caucus on January 7 as leader and became premier the next day. 1970 Quebec General Election
The 1970 Quebec general election was held on April 29, 1970, to elect members of the National Assembly of Quebec. The former Legislative Assembly had been renamed the "National Assembly" in 1968, with its members now known in English as Members of the National Assembly (MNAs). In the election, the Quebec Liberal Party, led by Robert Bourassa, defeated the incumbent Union Nationale, led by Premier Jean-Jacques Bertrand. This election marked the first appearance by a new party, the sovereigntist Parti Québécois, led by former Liberal cabinet minister René Lévesque. The PQ won a modest seven seats and came second in the popular vote, although Lévesque was defeated in his own riding.
