Anabantiformes
The Anabantiformes , is an Order (biology), order of bony fish (Teleostei) proposed in 2009. They are collectively known as labyrinth fish, are an Order (biology), order of air-breathing freshwater Actinopterygii, ray-finned fish with three suborders, eight Family (biology), families, and at least 350 species. This order is the sister group to the Synbranchiformes, with both comprising the Monophyly, monophyletic clade Anabantaria. Anabantaria is a sister group to the Carangiformes, with the clade comprising both being a sister clade to the Ovalentaria. This group of fish are found in Asia and Africa, with some species introduced to North America. These fish are characterized by the presence of teeth on the parasphenoid. Gourami
Gouramis, or gouramies , are a group of fresh water, freshwater Anabantiformes, anabantiform fish that comprise the family (biology), family Osphronemidae. The fish are native to Asia—from the Indian Subcontinent to Southeast Asia and northeasterly towards Korea. The name "gourami", of Indonesian language, Indonesian origin from Sundanese language, Sundanese word the name "gurame", is also used for fish of the families Helostomatidae and Anabantidae. The climbing perch (''Anabas testudineus'') is a species of amphibious freshwater fish in the family Anabantidae (the climbing gouramis). A labyrinth fish native to Far Eastern Asia, the fish inhabits freshwater systems from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the west, to Southern China in the east, and to Southeast Asia west of the Wallace Line in the south. It is likely that ''Anabas testudineus'' is a species complex, with the binomial name applied to what are actually several different species. The Anabantoidei are a suborder of Anabantiformes, anabantiform ray-finned fish, ray-finned freshwater fish distinguished by their possession of a lung-like labyrinth organ, which enables them to breathe air. The fish in the Anabantoidei suborder are known as anabantoids or labyrinth fish, or colloquially as gouramies (which more precisely refers to the family Osphronemidae). Carangiformes
Carangiformes is a large, diverse order of ray-finned fishes within the clade Percomorpha. It is part of a sister clade to the Ovalentaria, alongside its sister group, the Anabantaria (including Anabantiformes and Synbranchiformes). The Carangiformes have been long regarded as a monotypic order with only the family Carangidae within it by some authorities, and the other current families within the order have been previously classified as part of the wider order Perciformes. The 5th edition of '' Fishes of the World'' classify six families within Carangiformes, with more recent authorities expanding the order to include up to 30 families, based on phylogenetic evidence. Synbranchiformes
Synbranchiformes, often called swamp eels, though that name can also refer specifically to Synbranchidae, is an order of ray-finned fishes that are eel-like but have spiny rays, indicating that they belong to the superorder Acanthopterygii. Taxonomy No synbrachiform fossil is known. The Mastacembeloidei were removed from the Perciformes and added to the Synbranchiformes after a phylogenetic analysis by Johnson and Patterson. ''Ombilinichthys'' is an extinct genus of gourami from the Ombilin Basin in Sumatra. It was discovered among fossils collected in 2009 from the lacustrine Sangkarewang Formation and described in 2015. It is the earliest known gourami, dated uncertainly to the Eocene. Parasphenoid
The parasphenoid is a bone which can be found in the cranium of many vertebrates. It is an unpaired dermal bone which lies at the midline of the roof of the mouth.
