Ampol Limited is an Australian petroleum company headquartered in Sydney, New South Wales. Ampol is the largest transport energy distributor and retailer in Australia, with more than 1,800 Ampol-branded service stations across the country . Ampol also operates in New Zealand through its subsidiary Z Energy. Ampol was first incorporated in 1936 and would later be owned by Pioneer International (now Hanson Australia). The Caltex brand in Australia separately began in 1941 to market petrol in its chain of service stations and was owned by Caltex Australia Limited. In 1995, the Ampol and Caltex operations merged to form Australian Petroleum, equally owned by Pioneer and Caltex Australia. Caltex is a petroleum brand name of Chevron Corporation used in the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East, and Southern Africa. Headquartered in Singapore, it is also the brand name of non-Chevron petroleum companies in some countries (such as New Zealand, and previously Australia and South Africa) under a trademark licensing agreement with Chevron. Caltex was also the name of the joint venture between Chevron and Texaco which used the Caltex brand name in its operations, until both parent companies merged in 2001 to form ChevronTexaco (later renamed simply to Chevron in 2005). Z Energy is a New Zealand fuel distributor with branded service stations. It owns some of the former assets of Shell New Zealand and Chevron New Zealand. It has been a subsidiary of Australian petroleum company Ampol since May 2022. Shell left the New Zealand fuel distribution business in April 2010, selling its operations to Infratil and the New Zealand Superannuation Fund, with the operations being rebranded as Z Energy in 2011. Z Energy acquired Chevron's New Zealand subsidiary Caltex in June 2016. Z Energy operates service stations under the Z Energy and Caltex New Zealand brands. Golden Fleece Company
Golden Fleece was an Australian brand of petroleum products and service stations operated by Harold Sleigh and Company, a business founded in Melbourne, Australia in 1893 by shipowner and merchant Harold Crofton Sleigh (1867–1933) and manufacturer and shipowner John McIlwraith (businessman), John McIlwraith (1828–1902). According to one account, Sleigh started in the petroleum trade in 1913, when a customer was unable to pay freight on a shipment of motor spirit, and the company took possession of the consignment. He later sold the tins of "motor spirit" at a significant profit, leading to the idea for reselling fuel. In 1917, Sleigh registered the trade name "Golden Fleece" for "illuminating, heating and lubricating oils, including petrol, benzine and kerosene", and the following year was clearly marketing "benzine" as a fuel for motorcycles. Sir William Gaston Walkley
Sir William Gaston Walkley (1 November 1896 – 12 April 1976) was a New Zealand oil company executive. Walkley was a founder of Australian oil company Ampol and was credited with being one of the early pioneers in opening up the North West Australia to oil exploration. In 1956 he instituted the Walkley Awards, the premier award for excellence in Australian journalism. Personal life Walkley was born in Ōtaki, New Zealand, on 1 November 1896 to Herbert and Jessie Walkley, who were British immigrants. He spent most of his early life close to Palmerston North, where his father worked as a draper. In 1917 Walkley enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, getting as far as England. Kurnell Refinery
The Kurnell Refinery was a crude oil refinery located in Kurnell on Botany Bay, New South Wales, Australia. It had a refining capacity of . It was operated by Caltex Australia, and owned by the Chevron Corporation. History Construction began on the refinery in 1953. The refinery was built in 1956 by Caltex on of land located in Botany Bay, close to Sydney. About 3,000 men worked at the project's various sites during the peak of construction. White Bay is a bay on Sydney Harbour with a surrounding locality near the suburbs of Balmain and Rozelle in the Inner West of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. History White Bay is named after John White, the naval surgeon aboard the First Fleet to Australia in 1788. Since the nineteenth century the bay has been used for water-based transport and industrial activities.
