Amity, Texas
Amity is an Unincorporated area#United States, unincorporated community in Comanche County, Texas, Comanche County, in the U.S. state of Texas. History The area in what is known as Amity today was first settled in the 1870s. The first grave in the community's cemetery was placed in 1877. The community got the name Amity because of the friendly relations of the locals. There was a church, a cemetery, and several scattered houses in Amity in 1940. There was hardly any change in 1966, but the church continued to operate in 1992 and the community continues to be listed on county maps. Geography Amity is located on an unnamed country road off Texas State Highway 36, away from the Brown County, Texas, Brown County line and northwest of Comanche, Texas, Comanche in the northwestern corner of Comanche County. Comanche County is a county located on the Edwards Plateau in Central Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 13,594. The county seat is Comanche. The county was founded in 1856 and is named for the Comanche Native American tribe. History Among the first inhabitants of present-day Comanche County were the Comanche Indian tribe. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and location information about more than two million physical and cultural features, encompassing the United States and its territories; the Compact of Free Association, associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau; and Antarctica. State Highway 36 (SH 36) runs from Freeport to Abilene. It was designated as the 36th Division Memorial Highway between Cameron and Sealy by the Texas Legislature in 1985. History SH 36 was originally proposed on November 21, 1917, as a route from Cisco to Waco. On December 20, 1917, this became part of SH 18. Brown County is a county in west-central Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 38,095. Its county seat is Brownwood. The county was founded in 1856 and organized in 1858. It is named for Henry Stevenson Brown, a commander at the Battle of Velasco, an early conflict between Texians and Mexicans.
