Ambrose–Torquay Border Crossing
The Ambrose–Torquay Border Crossing connects the towns of Ambrose, North Dakota, and Torquay, Saskatchewan, on the Canada–US border. North Dakota Highway 42 on the American side joins Saskatchewan Highway 350 on the Canadian side. Canadian side The initial customs office was opened at Dupuis in June 1909, but was relocated closer to the border at Marienthal a month later. The two communities were in close proximity. A North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) corporal was in charge during the first year and the Port of North Portal provided administrative oversight. In 1912, the office moved into a government building. In 1935, a combined residence/office was erected, which was replaced in 1958. The crossing was renamed Torquay around the 1960s. US side In 1906, the railroad reached northward to Ambrose. Torquay, Saskatchewan
Torquay ( 2016 population: ) is a village in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan within the Rural Municipality of Cambria No. 6 and Census Division No. 2. It was named after Torquay in Devon, England. Torquay is at the junction of Highway 350 and 18. History Torquay was established in 1912 when the land was sold to the Canadian Pacific Railway for $2,400. At the suggestion of a railroad superintendent's wife, the area was named after the English town of Torquay as like its namesake, it had an abundant water supply. The Ambrose-Torquay Border Crossing that connects Torquay with the North Dakota village of Ambrose opened in 1915 and remains in daily use today. The geography of Saskatchewan is unique among the provinces and territories of Canada in some respects. The Long Creek Railroad is a Canadian shortline railway operating in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. History The Long Creek Railroad officially opened on October 2, 2012. The railway was formed in 2012 when the Long Creek Railroad, previously a rail equipment operating company that had been managing the line since 2005, organized the purchase of 40 miles of former Canadian Pacific Railway trackage with the support of about 25 initial investors.
