''Alvin'' (DSV-2) is a crewed deep-ocean research submersible owned by the United States Navy and operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) of Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The original vehicle was built by General Mills' Electronics Group in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Named to honor the prime mover and creative inspiration for the vehicle, Allyn Vine, ''Alvin'' was commissioned on June 5, 1964. The submersible is launched from the deep submergence support vessel , which is also owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by WHOI. The submersible has made more than 5,200 dives, carrying two scientists and a pilot, observing the lifeforms that must cope with super-pressures and move about in total darkness, as well as exploring the Wreck of the RMS Titanic, wreck of ''Titanic''. Friedrich Carl Alwin Pockels
Friedrich Carl Alwin Pockels (18 June 1865 – 29 August 1913) was a German physicist. He was born in Italy to Captain Theodore Pockels and Alwine Becker. He obtained a doctorate from the University of Göttingen in 1888, and from 1900 to 1913 he was professor of theoretical physics at the University of Heidelberg. Pockels studied under the guidance of Woldemar Voigt, who was a physicist working on the general phenomena of piezoelectricity and pyroelectricity. In 1890, Pockels developed a general theory of electro-optics. In 1893 he discovered that a steady electric field applied to certain birefringent materials causes the refractive index to vary, approximately in proportion to the strength of the field. The coefficient of proportionality is of the order of to . This phenomenon is now called the Pockels effect. Patricio Aylwin Azócar (; 26 November 1918 – 19 April 2016) was a Chilean politician from the Christian Democratic Party, lawyer, author, professor and former senator. He was the 30th president of Chile and the first president to be elected after the absolute rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, and his election marked the Chilean transition to democracy in 1990. Despite resistance from elements of the Chilean military and government after his election, Aylwin was staunch in his support for the Chilean National Commission for Truth and Reconciliation which exposed the systematic brutalities of the dictatorship. Karl Alwin often Carl Alwin (formerly known as Alwin Oskar Pinkus; 15 April 1891 – 15 October 1945) was a German orchestra conductor. Biography Alwin was born in Königsberg. He studied philosophy, literature and music in Berlin alongside his friends Engelbert Humperdinck and Hugo Kaun. After his education, he worked from 1910 at the Berlin Court Opera and from 1912 in Bayreuth as an assistant. He then started his career as a conductor in 1913 in Halle (Saale), 1914 in Poznań, 1915–1917 in Düsseldorf and then until 1920 in Hamburg. __NOTOC__ Alwin Wolz (22 September 1897 – 15 September 1978) was a general in the Luftwaffe of Nazi Germany during World War II who commanded the 3rd Flak Division. He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Wolz commanded the 3rd Flak Division between 1 May 1944 and 2 April 1945. Wolz was appointed combat commander of Hamburg on 15 April 1945. Alwin Josef Wagner (born 11 August 1950 in Melsungen, Hessen) is a West Germany, West German discus thrower and weight lifter, who was affiliated with ''University Sportclub Mainz'' (USC Mainz). Alwin Schultz (6 August 1838 – 10 March 1909) was a German art historian and medievalist, professor of art history at the Charles University in Prague. Biography He was born at Muskau, Lusatia. He studied archaeology and Germanic philology at the University of Breslau (1858/59 and 1862–64), and in 1859–61 attended the Bauakademie in Berlin, where he also took drawing classes. In 1866 he became a docent for Christian archaeology and art history at Breslau, where in 1872 he was named an associate professor. In 1882 he was called to the University of Prague as a full professor. Among his publications are a treatise on the Minnesingers in two volumes (1889) and a discussion of Germany in the 14th and 15th centuries (1892) as well as a treatise on domestic life in Europe during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period (1903).
