Alva, Gotland
Alva is a populated area, a socken (not to be confused with parish), on the Swedish island of Gotland. It comprises the same area as the administrative Alva District, established on 1January 2016. Geography Alva is the name of the socken as well as the district. It is also the name of the small village surrounding the medieval Alva Church, sometimes referred to as ''Alva kyrkby''. Alva Church
Alva Church () is a medieval church in Alva on the Swedish island of Gotland. The oldest parts of the church date from the late 12th century; with the halted construction of the tower about a century later, building activity ceased. The church contains medieval murals as well as a number of medieval furnishings and pieces of art. It lies in the Diocese of Visby of the Church of Sweden. History and architecture The oldest parts of the church are the late Romanesque choir (architecture), choir and the apse, dating from the late 12th century. To this the nave (architecture), nave was added during the late part of the same century. Construction of the broad tower started about a hundred years later but was never finished; hence the somewhat squat appearance of the church today. The Parishes of the Church of Sweden () are subdivisions within the Church of Sweden that historically were called ''socken'' but nowadays are called ''församling''. Similar units were used for municipalities of Sweden, municipal (''landskommun'') and cadastre, cadastral purposes (''jordebokssocknar'' or ''jordregistersocknar'') until the 20th century.
