Aluar
Aluar is the only aluminium smelter in Argentina and one of the largest in South America. History Established in 1970 as a partnership between synthetic rubber maker FATE, businessman José Ber Gelbard, and other private investors, Aluar obtained an exclusive licence to produce aluminum from the military regime of General Alejandro Lanusse, who sought to make Argentina self-sufficient in the critical industrial staple. Following state-financed works on a hydroelectric dam in Trevelin, Chubut Province, Aluar opened its first smelter in Puerto Madryn, in 1974. The 47th largest enterprise in Argentina in 1979, and with an output of 140,000 metric tons, Aluar/FATE was listed on the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange that year. MERVAL
The S&P MERVAL Index (''MERcado de VALores'', ) is the most important index of the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange. It is a price-weighted index, calculated as the market value of a portfolio of stocks selected based on their market share, number of transactions and quotation price. The base of MERVAL is set at 30 June 1986 = 0.01 Argentine pesos. It is part of a joint-venture between S&P Dow Jones Indices and BYMA. The corporations and weighted prices that compose MERVAL are updated every three months, based on their market share during the previous period. Pechiney SA was a major aluminium conglomerate based in France. The company was acquired in 2003 by the Alcan Corporation, headquartered in Canada. In 2007, Alcan itself was taken over by mining giant Rio Tinto Alcan. Futaleufú River
The Futaleufú River, located in northern Patagonia, is one of two rivers that cross the Argentina–Chile border. Its headwaters can be found in the glacial snow melt of the UNESCO protected Los Alerces National Park in Argentina. The river gorge drops as low as below the surrounding glaciated peaks. The name Futaleufú is an indigenous Mapuche word meaning "Big River". Locals refer to the valley as "un paisaje pintado por Dios" — a landscape painted by God.
