Altona-Kiel Railway Company
The Altona-Kiel Railway Company (, AKE) was a joint-stock company, established under the law of Denmark in personal union with the Duchy of Holstein, that built and operated an 105 km railway line between Altona and the Baltic Sea port city of Kiel. Altona was at that time the second largest city under Danish rule and the railway line was the first built in Danish-controlled territory. Formation Background The company was founded in December 1840 on the initiative of merchants from Altona and Kiel. Among the initiators in Kiel were Georg Hanssen and Johann Christian Kruse. The participants sought to improve the transport of their goods to markets by connecting the North and Baltic Seas and they agreed to promote this objective as members of the Altona-Kiel railway committee. In 1833, the economist Friedrich List had proposed a network of railways in Germany, including a rail link between the Hanseatic cities of Hamburg and Lübeck. Ake (or Aké in Spanish orthography) is an archaeological site of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. It is located in the Tixkokob (municipality), municipality of Tixkokob, in the Mexico, Mexican state of Yucatán (state), Yucatán; 40 km (25 mi) east of Mérida, Yucatán. The name ''Ake'' is a toponym that means "place of reeds" in Yucatec Maya language, Yucatec Maya. One notable feature of the site is its system of pre-Columbian ''sacbeo'ob'' or roads that facilitate access with other settlements in the region. The architecture dates from the Mesoamerican chronology, Early Classic era (A.D. 250-550). They were first described in print by John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood in the early 1840s. Aké is bounded by two concentric walls; one defines the core of the settlement with an area of 4 km2, while the other protects the core housing.
