In Greek mythology, Althaea (; Ancient Greek: Ἀλθαία ''Althaía'' "healer" from ἀλθαίνω ''althaino'', "to cure", also "a kind of Malvaceae, mallow"), also rendered Althea or Althaia, was queen of Calydon through her marriage to King Oeneus. Althaea appears in Myth, myths surrounding the fabled Calydonian boar hunt, and is infamous for murdering her son Meleager. ''Althaea'' is a genus of herbaceous perennial plants native to Europe, North Africa and western Asia. It includes ''Althaea officinalis'', also known as the marshmallow plant, whence the Marshmallow, fluffy confection got its name. They are found on the banks of Riparian zone, rivers and in salt marshes, preferring moist, sandy soils. The stems grow to 1–2 m tall, and flower in mid summer. 119 Althaea is a main-belt asteroid that was discovered by Canadian-American astronomer J. C. Watson on April 3, 1872, and named after Althaea, the mother of Meleager in Greek mythology. Two occultations by Althaea were observed in 2002, only a month apart. Based upon its spectrum, this is classified as an S-type asteroid.
