Altadena () is an unincorporated area, and census-designated place in the San Gabriel Valley and the Verdugos regions of Los Angeles County, California. Directly north of Pasadena, it is located approximately from Downtown Los Angeles. Its population was 42,846 at the 2020 census, up slightly from a 2010 figure of 42,777. In early 2025, the community was severely impacted by the Eaton Fire. History Etymology The name Altadena was coined by Byron O. Clark, who established Altadena Nursery in 1875. The name combines the Spanish alta, meaning 'upper,' with dena, a term he likely adapted from Pasadena, though its precise origin remains unclear. The area is adjacent to, but at a higher elevation than, Pasadena.Manning, Mike. Eaton Canyon
Eaton Canyon is a major canyon beginning at the Eaton Saddle near Mount Markham and San Gabriel Peak in the San Gabriel Mountains in the Angeles National Forest, United States. Its drainage flows into the Rio Hondo river and then into the Los Angeles River. It is named after Judge Benjamin S. Eaton, who lived in the Fair Oaks Ranch House in 1865 not far from Eaton Creek. The most well-known portion of the canyon is the Eaton Canyon Nature Center in Pasadena, California. The trailhead of the Mount Wilson Toll Road is in the canyon. The Arroyo Seco, meaning "dry stream" in Spanish, is a U.S. Geological Survey. Andrew McNally
Andrew McNally (1836–1904) was an Irish-American publisher and co-founder of the company Rand McNally. Early life On March 4, 1836, McNally was born in Armagh, Ireland. Career A printer by trade, he moved to Chicago in 1858 and got a job in a print shop owned by William H. Rand at a wage of $9 per week. In 1873, McNally and William H. Rand incorporated Rand McNally, Rand, McNally & Co. With William H. Rand as President and McNally as Vice President. Rancho San Pascual
Rancho San Pascual, also known as Rancho el Rincón de San Pascual, was a Mexican land grant in present-day Los Angeles County, California, given to Juan Marine in 1834 by Mexican Governor José Figueroa. The former Rancho San Pascual land includes present-day cities of Pasadena, South Pasadena, and portions of San Marino, and the unincorporated communities of Altadena and San Pasqual. John Strother Griffin
John Strother Griffin (1816–1898) was a surgeon attached to the General Stephen W. Kearney expedition from New Mexico to California, a landowner and founder of East Los Angeles and a member of the Common Council of the city of Los Angeles, where he was one of the first university-trained physicians to settle. Family John Strother Griffin was born in Fincastle, Virginia, on June 25, 1816, to John Caswell Griffin and Mary Talbot Hancock, both of Virginia. He had five siblings, George Hancock, William Preston, Julia Elizabeth, Caroline Margaret and Elizabeth Croghan.
