Alta (town)
( Norwegian; ), , or is a town in Alta Municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. The town is the administrative centre of the municipality and the major commercial centre in the western part of the county of Finnmark. The town is located on the southern end of Altafjorden at the mouth of the river Altaelva. There are several suburbs around the town: Kåfjord, Kvenvik, and Jiepmaluokta lie to the west; Øvre Alta and Tverrelvdalen lie to the south; and Rafsbotn lies to the east. The famous rock carvings at Alta lie just to the west of the town. Alta is considered the northernmost city in the world with a population surpassing 10,000. Altaelva
Altaelva (; ; ) is the third-longest river in Finnmark county, Norway. The river begins in the mountains and lakes in Kautokeino Municipality, near the border with Finnmark county and Finland, just south of Reisa National Park. The long river then runs northward into Alta Municipality where it flows out into the Altafjorden in the town of Alta. The river has carved out Sautso, one of the largest canyons in Europe on its way from the high Finnmarksvidda plateau down to the sea. The villages of Kautokeino and Masi are located along the river, in addition to the town of Alta. During the 1970s and 1980s, the river was the site of the Alta controversy regarding the construction of a dam and hydroelectric power plant. Elvebakken Church
Elvebakken Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Alta Municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. It is located in the Elvebakken area in the town of Alta. It is one of the churches for the Alta parish which is part of the Alta prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1964 using plans drawn up by the architect Håkon Soltveit. The church seats about 210 people. History The people of the Elvebakken area of Alta began pushing for their own local church in 1911. They had been advocating moving the Kåfjord Church to Elvebakken when the copper plant closed. After World War I, people raised money to build a church in Elvebakken, but the banking crisis led to the money collected being lost when the Hammerfest Sparekasse bank failed. Alta Church
Alta Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Alta Municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. It is located in the Bossekop area in the town of Alta. It is one of the churches for the Alta parish which is part of the Alta prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1858 using plans drawn up by the architect Stephen Henry Thomas. The church seats about 230 people. History The first church built in Alta was the present building which was completed in 1858. The building was consecrated by the Bishop Knud Gislesen. The church was heavily damaged by the retreating German army in 1944 near the end of World War II. The church benches were burned, the windows were broken, and the electrical system was ruined. Rock Carvings At Alta
The Rock art of Alta () are located in and around Alta Municipality in Finnmark county in northern Norway. Since the first carvings were discovered in 1973, more than 6,000 carvings have been found on several sites around Alta. The largest locality, at Jiepmaluokta about from Alta, contains thousands of individual carvings and has been turned into an open-air museum. The site, along with the sites Storsteines, Kåfjord, Amtmannsnes, and Transfarelv, was placed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites on 3 December 1985. It is Norway's only prehistoric World Heritage Site. The carvings were divided into five separate groups by Professor Knut Helskog, of the Department of Cultural Sciences at the University of Tromsø.
