Alpine Skiing At The 2006 Winter Olympics – Men's Slalom
The slalom skiing, slalom competition is shorter than the giant slalom, but is otherwise similar in emphasizing maneuverability. Slalom has been a part of all the Winter Olympics since 1936 Winter Olympics, 1936, although it was a part of the alpine combination that year. Only the downhill event has a longer history at the Winter Olympics. The men's slalom took place on 25 February and was the last of the Olympic alpine skiing competitions. Jean-Pierre Vidal of France was the defending Olympic champion, but he hadn't won a World Cup slalom event since the 2001–02 season. Nevertheless, Vidal was fourth in the slalom World Cup, one place ahead of defending World Champion Benjamin Raich. The Italy, Italian Giorgio Rocca led the World Cup after winning all five races thus far in the season, 215 points ahead of the second-placed American Ted Ligety. Sestriere
Sestriere (, , , ) is a ski resort in Piedmont, Italy, a ''comune'' (municipality) of the Metropolitan City of Turin. It is situated in Val Susa, from the France, French border. Noel Baxter (born 25 July 1981) is a Scottish alpine skier from Aviemore. He represented Britain at the 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics. Chip Knight
Chip Knight (born January 11, 1975) is an American former professional alpine skier. He competed in the 1998 Winter Olympics, 2002 Winter Olympics, and 2006 Winter Olympics. Knight has served as the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association Alpine Development Director since 2015. Early life Knight was born on January 11, 1975, in Stamford, Connecticut, to parents Woody and Bonnie Knight. His family was very involved in athletics; Chip and two other siblings qualified for the U.S. national teams in skiing while his sister Heather runs marathons. As he grew up in Stowe, Vermont, Chip trained at the Mt. Mansfield Ski Club and Burke Mountain Academy. Michael Janyk
Michael Janyk (born March 22, 1982, in Vancouver) is a Canadian retired alpine skier. Janyk appeared for the Canadian team in the slalom event at the 2006 Winter Olympics, where he finished in 17th place. Janyk has yet to win a World Cup race in his professional career, but has finished second on one occasion, December 3, 2006, in a slalom race in Beaver Creek. He also won the bronze medal in Slalom in February at the 2009 Alpine Skiing World Championship in Val d'Isère. He announced his retirement from the sport in March 2014. Along with team-mate Manuel Osborne-Paradis he established the Mike and Manny Foundation, which organises ski camps for children. Alain Baxter
Alain Baxter (born 26 December 1973) is a Scottish former alpine skier who was formerly a professional specialising in the slalom discipline. He is best known for failing a drug test after finishing third in the men's slalom of the 2002 Winter Olympics, resulting in him being controversially stripped of the bronze medal; he would have become the first British person to win an Olympic medal in a skiing event. The use of a nasal inhaler purchased in the US had led to the presence of a banned substance in Baxter's urine. He was allowed to return to competition, although his appeal to have the medal reinstated failed. He competed in FIS events from 1991 to 2009 and became known as "The Highlander". Silvan Zurbriggen
Silvan Zurbriggen (born 15 August 1981) is a retired Swiss World Cup alpine ski racer who competed primarily in downhill and combined, and occasionally in super-G. In 2012, he stopped competing in slalom due to poor results. Born in Brig, Valais, Zurbriggen represented Switzerland in seven world championships and two Olympics. Marc Berthod (born 24 November 1983 in Saint-Moritz) is a retired Swiss alpine skier. In 2005, he was Swiss champion in giant slalom. Drago Grubelnik
Drago Grubelnik (15 January 1976 – 17 November 2015) was a Slovenian alpine skier and coach. Born in Radlje ob Dravi, Grubelnik made the podium in one event on the Alpine Skiing World Cup, a third place in slalom in Wengen, Switzerland (January 2000). James Michael Cochran (born May 29, 1981) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from the United States. He specialized in the technical events and his best World Cup finish was seventh in a Giant slalom in December 2005. Born in Burlington, Vermont, Cochran is the son of Bob Cochran, one of the " Skiing Cochrans" family of Richmond, Vermont. He represented the U.S. in the Winter Olympics in 2006 and 2010 and the World Championships in 2005, 2007, and 2009. Cochran's best Olympic finish was 12th in the slalom in 2006, and his best result at the world championships was tenth in the slalom at Val d'Isère in 2009.
