Allenport is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States. It lies southeast of Mount Union on the Juniata River in Shirley Township. The population was 648 as of the 2010 census. Allenport is the location of the Riverview Business Center, home of manufacturing facilities for Bonney Forge, FCI (formerly Berg), and Containment Solutions (formerly Fluid Containment). Geography Allenport is in eastern Huntingdon County, bordered to the north by the borough of Mount Union and to the northeast across the Juniata River by the borough of Kistler in Mifflin County. U.S. Route 522 passes through Allenport, leading north into Mount Union and south to Shirleysburg. Mount Union, Pennsylvania
Mount Union is a borough in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States, approximately southeast of Altoona and southeast of Huntingdon, on the Juniata River. In the vicinity are found bituminous coal, ganister rock, fire clay, and some timber. A major Easter grass factory is located in the northern quadrant of the borough limits; until May 2007, the facility was owned by Bleyer Industries. The population was 2,447 at the 2010 census. It was at one time the world's largest producer of refractory material (silica brick), with three plants – General Refractories, United States Refractories, and Harbison Walker. East Broad Top Railroad And Coal Company
The East Broad Top Railroad (EBT) is a narrow gauge historic and heritage railroad headquartered in Rockhill Furnace, Pennsylvania. Operating from 1871 to 1956, it is one of the nation's oldest and best-preserved narrow-gauge railroads, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964. The railroad is now preserved for use as a tourist attraction. After a nine-year closure, in February 2020 it was announced that the railroad had been purchased by a non-profit foundation and regular train service resumed in the summer of 2021. Notability The EBT is unusual in that it is a complete, original railroad rather than a collection of pieces from various locations, as most tourist railroads are. Shirleysburg, Pennsylvania
Shirleysburg is a borough in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 150 at the 2010 census. History Shirleysburg was originally the site of, and takes its name from Fort Shirley, a French and Indian War fort. During this period, in 1754 ''Monacatoocha'' (''Scarouady'') led about 200 French-allied Native Americans: Iroquois, Lenape, and Shawnee from their village of Logstown on the western frontier to take refuge near here. The narrow gauge East Broad Top Railroad (EBT) was constructed through Shirleysburg in 1873. It continued to serve the town for 83 years, until it ceased operations in 1956. Since 1960 EBT tourist trains have operated from Rockhill to Colgate Grove, just south of town, where a wye was constructed to turn trains. Containment was a geopolitical strategic foreign policy pursued by the United States during the Cold War to prevent the spread of communism after the end of World War II. The name was loosely related to the term '' cordon sanitaire'', which was containment of the Soviet Union in the interwar period. As a component of the Cold War, this policy caused a response from the Soviet Union to increase communist influence in Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Containment represented a middle-ground position between détente (relaxation of relations) and rollback (actively replacing a regime). Bonney Forge Corporation
Bonney Forge was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1876 by Charles S. Bonney. Originally Bonney Forge crafted forged and finished hardware for horse-drawn wagons, later it became a manufacturer of automotive hand tools, and now it is a manufacturer of fittings and unions, branch connections, steel valves and specialty products. In 1953 Bonney Forge was taken over by the Miller Manufacturing Company of Detroit, Michigan. In 1964 the firm was sold to Kelsey-Hayes Corp. of Romulus, Michigan. The company was for many years based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where it had some of its manufacturing operations.
