Allen Bathurst, 9th Earl Bathurst
Allen Christopher Bertram Bathurst, 9th Earl Bathurst (born 11 March 1961), known as Lord Apsley until 2011, is a British peer, landowner and property developer. Life The son of Henry Bathurst, 8th Earl Bathurst, and his wife Judith Mary Nelson, he was styled as Lord Apsley from birth. He administers the Bathurst estate in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. It includes much of the villages of Sapperton and Coates, Pinbury Park, and the principal source of the River Thames. Within the estate is the Ivy Lodge polo ground, home of Cirencester Park Polo Club. On 16 October 2011, he succeeded his father as Earl Bathurst (1772), Baron Bathurst of Battlesden (1712), and Lord Apsley (1771), all in the peerage of Great Britain. In 2018 he was living with his wife Sara at Cirencester House, the family seat. Cirencester House
Cirencester Park is a country house in the parish of Cirencester in Gloucestershire, England, and is the seat of the Bathurst family, Earls Bathurst. It is a Grade II* listed building. The gardens are Grade I listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. History Allen Bathurst, 1st Earl Bathurst (1684–1775), inherited the estate on the death of his father, Sir Benjamin Bathurst, in 1704. He was a Tory Member of Parliament and statesman who made his wealth from his involvement in the slave trade through the Royal Africa Company and the East India Company. From 1714 Benjamin Bathurst devoted himself to rebuilding the house formerly known as Oakley Grove, which probably stands on the site of Cirencester Castle, and laying out the parkland of what would become Oakley Park. Earl Bathurst, of Bathurst in the County of Sussex, is a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. The medieval English word was Botehurst, thought to date at least from the 13th century. Bote is the origination of Battle, although the family may have settled there post-dating the Conquest. This translated as 'a wood in a wood' which may in contradistinction have meant a clearing. The name of Apsley adopted by the family derived from Thakenham, near Pulborough in east Sussex, which may have referred to apse - lea or a 'church in a meadow'. The Bathurst estates were at Cirencester Park and Paulerspury, Northamptonshire, which Bathursts inherited before the park was laid out in the Cotswolds.
