Allan Water
The Allan Water () is a river in central Scotland. Rising in the Ochil Hills, it runs through Strathallan to Dunblane and Bridge of Allan before joining the River Forth. It is liable to cause floods in lower Bridge of Allan. It shares its name with a tributary of the River Teviot. The name is similar to the Ale Water in Berwickshire, the River Alness in Ross-shire, the Allander Water in Stirlingshire, the River Alne and the Ayle Burn in Northumberland, the River Ellen in Cumbria, and several names in the south of England, Wales and Cornwall. Ptolemy, who wrote his Geography about 150 AD, gave the names of some of these rivers as Alauna or Alaunos. Ekwall says that Alauna or Alaunos are British .e. Brythonic or P-Celticriver names. Nicolaisen says that the name Allan is of Pre-Celtic Indo-European origin. Its original form was Alauna, from the Indo-European root *el-/ol-, meaning "to flow, to stream". Several European rivers and settlements have names that may come from tha ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Alan (given Name)
Alan is a masculine given name in the English and Breton languages. Its surname form is Aland. There is consensus that in modern English and French, the name is derived from the nomadic Iranian people known as the Alans, who settled in Western Europe during the Migration Period. Etymology and early history ''Alan'' is a masculine given name in the English language. The modern English ''Alan'', and French '' Alain'', are derived from the name of the Alans. Described by Roman authors as tall, blond, and warlike, the Alans were a nomadic Iranian people who lived on the Eurasian Steppe and the Caucasus Mountains. Related to the Scythians, the Alans were known to Classical authors in the 1st century BC. The Alans settled in Western Europe in the Early Middle Ages. Because there is no recorded use of the ethnonym ''Alani'' prior to the 1st century, and because no location with a placename derived from ''Alani'' can be shown to be older than the 5th century, it is likely th ... Allan Valve Gear
The Stephenson valve gear or Stephenson link or shifting link is a simple design of valve gear that was widely used throughout the world for various kinds of steam engines. It is named after Robert Stephenson but was invented by his employees. Historical background During the 1830s, the most popular valve drive for steam locomotives was known as ''gab valve gear, gab motion'' in the History of rail transport in Great Britain 1830–1922, United Kingdom and'' V-hook motion'' in the History of rail transportation in the United States, United States. The gab motion incorporated two sets of eccentrics and rods for each cylinder; one eccentric was set to give forward and the other backwards motion to the engine and one or the other could accordingly engage with a pin driving the distribution valve by means of the gabs: - vee-shaped ends to the eccentric rods supposed to catch the rocker driving the valve rod whatever its position. It was a clumsy mechanism, difficult to operate, and ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Allan (song)
"Allan" is a 1988 song recorded by French singer-songwriter Mylène Farmer from her second album, '' Ainsi soit je...'' It was the first single from her first live album, '' En Concert'', released in December 1989. The lyrics clearly refer to a fairy tale by Edgar Allan Poe, mentioning one of his characters. Although the single met with success in discothèques, its sales remained relatively low in comparison with Farmer's other singles. Background and lyrics The song "Allan" was chosen as the first single from the 1989 concert before the live album '' En Concert'' was released. Unlike Farmer's previous singles, the B-side of the vinyl was not another live song, but the first version of "Psychiatric" (the 'new beat remix'), which appeared two years later on the album " L'autre...". "Allan" is a tribute to Edgar Allan Poe, an American poet, that Farmer is very appreciative and that she has evoked in many interviews. One verse of the song containing the word " Ligeia" which r ...
