Alla Fiera Dell'est
''Alla fiera dell'est'' is an album by the Italian singer-songwriter Angelo Branduardi. It was released in 1976 by Polydor and won the Italian Music Critic prize that same year. In 1978 it was released in a French version with the title "A la foire de l'est" and in an English version, entitled "Highdown Fair", with lyrics by Peter Sinfield. Lyrics of the Italian version were written by Branduardi's wife, Luisa Zappa. The title track is an adaptation of a Hebrew Passover song " Chad Gadya". "Il vecchio e la farfalla" is inspired by an oriental proverb mentioned in '' The Travels of Marco Polo''. "La serie dei numeri" ("The Song of Eternal Numbers") is taken from a Breton song, " Ar rannoù" ("The series"), contained in the anthology Barzaz Breiz. The melody of "Sotto il tiglio" ("Under the Linden Tree") is based on a German lied entitled "Unter den Linden", written by Walther von der Vogelweide. Angelo Branduardi
Angelo Branduardi (born 12 February 1950) is an Italian folk music, folk/folk rock singer-songwriter and composer who scored relative success in Italy and European countries such as France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and Greece. Early and personal life Branduardi was born in Cuggiono, a small town in the province of Milan, but early moved with the family to Genoa. He was educated as a classical violinist at the Genoa Conservatory. At the age of 18, he composed the music for the ''Confessioni di un malandrino'' (''Hooligan's Confession'') by Sergei Yesenin. He is married to Luisa Zappa, who wrote the lyrics for many of his songs. They have two daughters, Sarah and Maddalena, both musicians. Career Beginnings Branduardi's first album was never released, and resulted from a co-operation with Maurizio Fabrizio, composer and gifted performer. Maurizio Fabrizio
Maurizio Fabrizio (born 16 March 1952) is an Italian composer, conductor, arranger, producer, musician and singer-songwriter. Life and career Born in Milan, after studying at the conservatory in 1969 Fabrizio became a member of the La Scala orchestra as a percussionist under the direction of Claudio Abbado. In 1970 he formed a musical duo with his brother Popi, Maurizio e Fabrizio, recording several singles and entering the main competition at the 21st edition of the Sanremo Music Festival. In 1972 he started a long and fruitful collaboration as arranger and producer with Angelo Branduardi, and also began collaborating as composer and arranger with other artists including Ornella Vanoni, Patty Pravo and Mia Martini. Peter Sinfield
Peter John Sinfield (27 December 1943 – 14 November 2024) was an English poet and songwriter. He was best known as a co-founder and lyricist of King Crimson. Their debut album '' In the Court of the Crimson King'' is considered one of the first and most influential progressive rock albums ever released. Sinfield's lyrics are known for their surreal imagery, often involving common fantasy concepts, nature, or the sea. They often also deal with emotional concepts and, sometimes, storyline concepts. Later in his career, he adapted his songwriting to better suit pop music, and wrote a number of successful songs for artists such as Celine Dion, Cher, Cliff Richard, Leo Sayer, Five Star, and Bucks Fizz. Passover, also called Pesach (; ), is a major Jewish holidays, Jewish holiday and one of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals. It celebrates the Exodus of the Israelites from slavery in Biblical Egypt, Egypt. Chad Gadya ''or'' Had Gadya (Aramaic language, Aramaic: חַד גַדְיָא ''chad gadya'', "one little goat", or "one kid"; Hebrew language, Hebrew: "גדי אחד ''gedi echad''") is a playful cumulative song in Aramaic and Hebrew language, Hebrew. It is sung at the end of the Passover Seder, the Jewish ritual feast that marks the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Passover. The melody may have its roots in Middle Ages, Medieval German folk music. "Ar rannoù" ("The Series", published as "The Series, or the Druid and the Child"), also known as "Gousperoù ar raned" ("The Frogs' Vespers"), is a traditional Breton folksong, composed in twelve parts or " series". Origin and significance of the song The real origin of the song remains unknown. Théodore Hersart de La Villemarqué collected this song in Cornouaille, Brittany, and published it in '' Barzaz Breiz'', making it the opening piece of his work. For him the origin of the song stretches back to the time of the Druids and is a testimony of the past, treating of Breton mythology, the composition of the world, life and battles. Barzaz Breiz
''Barzaz Breiz'' (in modern spelling ''Barzhaz Breizh'', meaning "Ballads of Brittany": ''barzh'' is the equivalent of "bard" and ''Breizh'' means "Brittany") is a collection of Breton popular songs collected by Théodore Hersart de la Villemarqué and published in 1839. It was compiled from oral tradition and preserves traditional folk tales, legends and music. Hersart de la Villemarqué grew up in the manor of Plessix in Nizon, near Pont-Aven, and was half Breton himself. Significance The collection was published in the original Breton language with a French translation.
