Aljunied Group Representation Constituency
The Aljunied Group Representation Constituency is a five-member group representation constituency (GRC) in the north-eastern and eastern region of Singapore. It consists of a large part of Hougang (excluding Hougang SMC), Paya Lebar, Serangoon Gardens, the southern half of Serangoon North as well as a portion of Bedok. The GRC consists of five divisions: Eunos, Bedok Reservoir-Punggol, Kaki Bukit, Serangoon and Paya Lebar. The current Members of Parliament are Pritam Singh, Sylvia Lim, Gerald Giam, Fadli Fawzi and Kenneth Tiong from the Workers' Party (WP). History Creation Aljunied GRC was formed in 1988 and was won by the People's Action Party (PAP) against the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) with 56.33% of the votes to 43.67%. It was uncontested in 1991, and was contested again in 1997 by the SDP with a much poorer result as compared to 1988, garnering only 32.98% of the votes against 67.02% from the PAP. Eunos Group Representation Constituency
Eunos Group Representation Constituency (Simplified Chinese: 友诺士集选区;Traditional Chinese: 友諾士集選區) is a defunct Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the north-eastern region of Singapore. This GRC existed for the 1988 and 1991 general election before being absorbed into Aljunied GRC and the brand new East Coast GRC for the 1997 general election. Low Thia Khiang
Low Thia Khiang (; born 5 September 1956) is a Singaporean former politician and the secretary-general of the Workers' Party (WP) between 2001 and 2018. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Hougang Single Member Constituency (SMC) between 1991 and 2011, and the Bedok Reservoir–Punggol division of Aljunied Group Representation Constituency (GRC) between 2011 and 2020. Low was one of the two opposition MPs in Parliament between 1997 and 2011. Low made his political debut in the 1991 general election where he contested in Hougang SMC as a WP candidate. He was appointed secretary-general of the Workers' Party on 27 May 2001. Serangoon North Village and Estate is a cluster of HDB apartment flats located north of Serangoon Central separated by Serangoon Gardens to the west and private housing estates to the east with Yio Chu Kang Road connecting the two areas. It is a subzone of the neighbouring area Hougang. It is sandwiched between Ang Mo Kio to the west, Serangoon Gardens to the southwest, and Hougang to the east. Serangoon Gardens
Serangoon Garden Estate is a residential estate in the Serangoon district of the North-East Region of Singapore. It is also commonly known as "Ang Sar Lee" (''红砂厘)'' for historical reasons, referring to red zinc roofs of the houses in the estate. History Serangoon Garden is one of the oldest estates on the island, and was built during the 1950s. The estate was upgraded in 2001 as part of the Singapore Government's plan to improve the older private housing estates in Singapore. Open roadside drains were covered up. Paya Lebar
Paya Lebar ( ) is a planning area located in the East Region of Singapore, bordered by Hougang to the west, Sengkang to the northwest, Tampines to the east, Bedok to the south and Pasir Ris to the north. As part of the Singapore Urban Redevelopment Authority's (URA) Master Plan 2014, Paya Lebar Central was identified as one of the five growth areas. It was since earmarked as an up-and-coming commercial hub, in line with the wider decentralisation strategy to ensure the city's sustainable growth. Paya Lebar participates in the pilot Business Improvement District (BID) programme. Hougang Single Member Constituency
The Hougang Single Member Constituency is a single member constituency (SMC) located in the north-eastern area of Singapore. The current Member of Parliament is Dennis Tan from the Workers' Party (WP). History The constituency was first formed prior to the 1988 general election and was won by the People's Action Party (PAP) in its debut. However, PAP's representation of Hougang SMC would only last three years, when it lost the seat to the Workers' Party (WP) candidate Low Thia Khiang after an almost 12% swing during the 1991 general election. In the 2006 general election, then- Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong was tasked with helping the PAP to win back the two opposition wards of Hougang SMC and Potong Pasir SMC, the former of which was promised a $100 million upgrading plan. Hougang () is a planning area and mature residential town located in the North-East Region of Singapore. It is the largest housing estate in Singapore based on land area, and is home to 247,528 residents as of 2018.
