Alina Cała
Alina Cała (born 19 May 1953 in Warsaw) is a Polish writer, historian and sociologist. A former board member of the Jewish Historical Institute, she specialises in 19th and 20th century Polish-Jewish history, antisemitism and Jewish assimilation in Central and Eastern Europe. Life After 1976 Alina Cała collaborated with the Workers' Defence Committee and Committee for Social Self-defence KOR. In the 1980s she also co-founded the folk high school in Zbrosza Duża, perhaps the first institution for adult education to be independent from the Communist authorities since the end of World War II. After 1989 she has been a feminist and pro-choice activist. She collaborates with the Greens 2004 party. As a historian, Alina Cała focuses mostly on Polish-Jewish relations in the last two centuries. Holocaust In Occupied Poland
The Holocaust saw the ghettoization, robbery, deportation and mass murder of Jews, alongside other groups under similar racial pretexts in occupied Poland by the Nazi Germany. Over three million Polish Jews were murdered, primarily at the Chelmno, Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka and Auschwitz extermination camps, who made up half of the Jewish Holocaust victims. During Nazi occupation, the country lost 20% of its population, or six million people, including three million Jews (90% of the country's Jewish population). The important Polish Jewish community pre-war was almost destroyed. All Poles, Christian or Jewish, were bound for total annihilation. In 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland while the Soviet Union invaded Poland from the east. In German-occupied Poland, Jews were killed, subjected to forced labor, and forced to move to ghettos. Piotr Gontarczyk
Piotr Gontarczyk (born 29 April 1970 in Żyrardów, Poland) is a Polish historian with a doctorate in history and political science. He is employed by the Polish Institute of National Remembrance. He specializes in the World War II history of the Polish communist movement, and in contemporary Polish history. Career Piotr Gontarczyk studied journalism and political science at Warsaw University, in 2003 receiving a doctorate for his thesis, ''The Polish Workers' Party: The Road to Power, 1942-1945''. In 2004 the thesis was honored with a Jerzy Łojek Award. Gontarczyk has also studied at the Warsaw University Institute of History. In 1998–2005 he worked in the office of the Commissioner for the Public Interest with its deputy commissioner, Judge Krzysztof Kauba.
