Alice Peak
Alice Peak is a mountain in Fiordland, New Zealand. Description Alice Peak is part of the Darran Mountains and is situated in the Southland Region of the South Island. It is set within Fiordland National Park which is part of the Te Wahipounamu UNESCO World Heritage Site. Precipitation runoff from the mountain drains east to the Hollyford River via Stickup and Glacier creeks. Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises above the Hollyford Valley in four kilometres. Hollyford River
The Hollyford River / Whakatipu Kā Tuka is in the southwest of the South Island of New Zealand. It runs for through Fiordland, its sources being close to the Homer Tunnel and in Gertrude Valley in the southern Darran Mountains. At first, the river flows southeast and east, coming as close as 1 km to the east–west divide of the South Island, before continuing north through the glacier-formed Hollyford Valley. Near the end, the river passes through Lake McKerrow before reaching Martins Bay on the coast of the Tasman Sea north of Milford Sound. The Hollyford Track follows the river's course. Part of the river's course is traditionally regarded as the boundary between the Southland and Otago regions, however, current maps show the entirety of the Hollyford Valley contained within the Southland Region. Orographic lift occurs when an air mass is forced from a low elevation to a higher elevation as it moves over rising terrain. As the air mass gains altitude it quickly cools down adiabatically, which can raise the relative humidity to 100% and create clouds and, under the right conditions, precipitation. Köppen Climate Classification
The Köppen climate classification divides Earth climates into five main climate groups, with each group being divided based on patterns of seasonal precipitation and temperature. The five main groups are ''A'' (tropical), ''B'' (arid), ''C'' (temperate), ''D'' (continental), and ''E'' (polar). Each group and subgroup is represented by a letter. The New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (NZGB) is the authority over geographical and hydrographic names within New Zealand and its territorial waters. This includes the naming of small urban settlements, localities, mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, harbours and natural features and may include researching local Māori names. It has named many geographical features in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica. It has no authority to alter street names (a local body responsibility) or the name of any country. Kate Gardiner
Kate (Katherine Maude) Gardiner (21 September 1885–29 January 1974) was an English mountaineer who climbed extensively in New Zealand. Biography Katherine Maude Gardiner was born in Wavertree, Liverpool, Lancashire, England on 21 September 1885. She was the daughter of the ship-owner, Frederick Gardiner who made the first ascent of Mount Elbrus and she climbed the Breithorn with her father when she was only 10 years old. Her father had died in 1919 leaving an estate of £56,128 (about £3.5 million in 2022) but her mother had a long-term health condition and until her death in 1926 Gardiner was her caregiver. In 1926, soon after her mother's death, and having been inspired by pictures of Mount Cook, Gardiner made her first visit to New Zealand.
