Alfrēds Verners
Alfrēds Verners (1 January 1912, Riga – 31 December 1973, USA) was a Latvian footballer and ice hockey player who played 19 matches for the Latvian national football team in the 1920s and 1930s. Biography Verners began playing both football and ice hockey with Union Riga, as it was a common practice among sportspeople in Latvia before World War II to compete in different sports in summer and winter. Verners got a wider popularity as in 1930 Union returned to the Latvian Higher League and unexpectedly earned a respectable fourth-place finish, and won the bronze medals just a year later. In ice hockey, Union was even stronger, winning the first two Latvian league tournaments, thus by 1933 Verners was a two-time champion of Latvia in ice hockey and a one time bronze medallist in football. Latvian Higher League or Virslīga, also known as TonyBet Virslīga for sponsorship reasons, is a professional association football league in Latvia and the highest level of the Latvian football league system. Organised by the Latvian Football Federation, the league is contested by ten clubs. The Latvian Football Cup () is the main knockout cup competition in Latvian football. Since 2021, its full name is Responsible Gaming Latvian Football Cup (''Atbildīgas spēles Latvijas kauss'') due to the sponsorship by sports betting company William Hill. The tournament was launched in 1937, replacing the previous knockout tournament – the Riga Football Cup. The competition is a knockout (single elimination) tournament. From 1937 to 2008 and again since 2017, all of the games of the tournament are played within the calendar year. During the Soviet occupation ( 1940–1941, 1944–1991) it served as a qualification tournament for the Soviet Cup. Latvia National Ice Hockey Team
The Latvian men's national ice hockey team represents Latvia in international ice hockey. The team is ranked 10th in the world by IIHF as of 2023. The team is controlled by the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation. Their best ever finish at the World Championships was in 2023, when they won the bronze medal. Ēriks Pētersons
Ēriks Pētersons (1909–1987) was a Latvian footballer and ice hockey player. Between 1929 and 1939 he played 63 international matches and scored 21 goals for Latvian national team. He also played in the Latvian national ice hockey team, where he appeared in eight matches. After World War II Pētersons moved to United States. Biography Ēriks Pētersons was first noticed in 1928 when he moved from a third league team directly to the strongest football club in Latvia, Rīgas FK. He started as a center forward but soon changed his position on the field to central midfield in which he still retained his goal scoring abilities. Union Riga
Union Riga was a football club established in Riga in 1907 and the second oldest club of the country after the Riga ''British Football Club''. It was the winner of the Riga football league in 1910. In the period of independence of Latvia between the world wars, Union played in the Latvian Higher League for several years. Being essentially a sports club of Baltic Germans, Union was disestablished in 1939 with the repatriation of Baltic Germans.
