Alexandru Lăpușneanu (novella)
Alexandru IV Lăpușneanu (1499 – 5 May 1568) was ruler of Moldavia between September 1552 and 18 November 1561 and then October 1564 to 5 May 1568. He was the son of Bogdan III the One-Eyed. His wife and consort was Doamna Ruxanda Lăpușneanu, the daughter of Peter IV Rareș and Princess Elena Ecaterina Rareș (the second daughter of Jovan Branković of Serbia). He was the original founder of the Dormition Church, Lviv, also commonly known as the Wallachian Church. His son Bogdan IV of Moldavia succeeded him and ruled 1568–1572. The writer Constantin Negruzzi wrote the short story ''Alexandru Lăpușneanu'' in 1857 based on the ruler's life; it was turned into an opera by Alexandru Zirra Alexandru is the Romanian form of the name Alexander. Alexandru is the Romanian form of the name Alexander. Common diminutives are Alecu, Alex, and Sandu. Origin Etymologically, the name is derived from the Greek "Αλέξανδρος" (Aléxandros), meaning "defending men" or "protector of men", a compound of the verb "ἀλέξω" (alexō), "to ward off, to avert, to defend" and the noun "ἀνδρός" (andros), genitive of "ἀνήρ" (anēr), "man". Constantin Negruzzi
Constantin Negruzzi (; first name often Costache ; 1808–24 August 1868) was a Romanian poet, novelist, translator, playwright, and politician. Born in Trifeștii Vechi, Moldavia, he studied at home with a Greek teacher. He admitted in a later article that he learnt Romanian by himself, from a book written by Petru Maior. During the 1821 Revolution, his family took refuge in Chișinău, Bessarabia, where he met Alexander Pushkin and became interested in literature. Notable among his writings are his memoirs – ''Amintiri din junețe'' ("Memories of youth") – and his historical writings, ''Fragmente istorice'' ("Historical fragments"), ''Negru in alb'' ("Black in white"), ''Aprodul purice'' (an '' aprod'' was a minor noble title, typically the son of a lord; ''Purice'' is a proper name, but literally means "flea"; see Movilești). Jovan Branković
Jovan Branković ( sr-Cyrl, Јован Бранковић, ; c. 1465 – 10 December 1502) was the titular Despot of Serbia from 1493 until his death in 1502. The title of Despot (court title), despot was given to him by Hungarian king Vladislas II of Hungary. From 1493 to 1497 he held the title together with his elder brother Đorđe Branković, who was despot from 1486. In 1497, Đorđe relinquished the title, and Jovan remained the sole Despot of Serbia, until his death in 1502. Jovan was the last Serbian Despot of the Branković dynasty.
