Alexandre Grégoire
Alexandre Grégoire (August 29, 1922 – July 28, 2001) was a Haitian painter who typically depicted scenes of Vodou, daily life, and historical events in the naïve style. Born in Jacmel, Grégoire was educated from 1930 to 1937 by the Christian Teaching Brothers, and then studied cabinet making at the Jacmel vocational school for two years. In 1939 he joined the army and played the tuba and saxophone in the army band. He stayed in the army until the 1950s; during the presidency of Paul Magloire he left the military and joined the band at the National Palace. Henri Christophe
Henri Christophe (; 6 October 1767 – 8 October 1820) was a key leader in the Haitian Revolution and the only monarch of the Kingdom of Haiti. Born in the British West Indies, British Caribbean, Christophe was possibly of Senegambian descent. Beginning with the slave uprising of 1791, he rose to power in the ranks of the Haitian revolutionary military. The revolution succeeded in gaining independence from France in 1804. In 1805 he took part under Jean-Jacques Dessalines in the capture of Era de Francia, Santo Domingo (now Dominican Republic), against French forces who acquired the colony from Spain in the Peace of Basel, Treaty of Basel. After Dessalines was assassinated, Christophe retreated to the Plaine-du-Nord and created a separate government. Le Centre d'Art, also known as Centre d'Art d'Haïti, is an art center, art school and art gallery located in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. It was founded in 1944 by American Watercolor painting, watercolorist DeWitt Peters and several prominent Haitians from the intellectual and cultural circles such as Maurice Borno, Albert Mangonès, Geo Remponeau, Jean Chenet and Gerald Bloncourt. It was established in 1956 by Larry Mellon, who was inspired by Hôpital Albert Schweitzer and the life and philosophy of Albert Schweitzer. History In 1947, Larry Mellon, inspired by Albert Schweitzer and his work in Africa at Hôpital Albert Schweitzer, went to medical school at Tulane University with the intention of following in Schweitzer's footsteps.
