Alexander Abernethy, 6th Lord Saltoun
Alexander Abernethy, 6th Lord Saltoun (died 1587) was a Scottish landowner and courtier. He was the son of William Abernethy, 5th Lord Saltoun (d. 1543), and Elizabeth Hay daughter of John Hay, 2nd Lord Hay of Yester (d. 1513). The Abernethy estates included Saltoun in East Lothian. His house in the north was Rothiemay, described in the sixteenth century as "a palace very fair". When Mary of Guise was fatally ill in Edinburgh Castle, Saltoun, Lord James Stewart, and the Earl Marischal had dinner with her on 8 June 1560. Saltoun favoured the cause of James VI of Scotland in the Marian Civil War. He was one of the lords who signed on 1 May 1570 the instructions given to Robert Pitcairn, Commendator of Dunfermline, as ambassador to England, asking Queen Elizabeth to declare support for the regime in Scotland, and for English troops. John Hay, 2nd Lord Hay Of Yester
John Hay, 2nd Lord Hay of Yester (died 9 September 1513) was a Scottish nobleman killed at the Battle of Flodden, although his body was never recovered. There is a song about him, "Lord Yester", with the words by George Weir and the music by Roy Williamson. It is based on the idea that people may have believed that he had gone to fight for his maker in foreign lands. It was sung by The Corries on their album "Live From Scotland Volume 2". He was the son of John Hay, 1st Lord Hay of Yester (c. 1450 – after October 1508) and his wife Elizabeth (d. 1529), daughter of George Cunningham of Belton. Huntly Castle
Huntly Castle is a ruined castle north of Huntly, Scotland, Huntly in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, where the rivers River Deveron, Deveron and River Bogie, Bogie meet. It was the ancestral home of the chief of Clan Gordon, Earl of Huntly. There have been four castles built on the site that have been referred to as Huntly Castle, Strathbogie Castle or Peel of Strathbogie. Lord Saltoun
Lord Saltoun, of Abernethy, is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created in 1445 for Sir Lawrence Abernethy. The title remained in the Abernethy family until the death in 1669 of his descendant the tenth Lady Saltoun. She was succeeded by her cousin Alexander Fraser, the eleventh Lord. He was the son of Alexander Fraser and Margaret Abernethy, daughter of the seventh Lord Saltoun. The title has remained in the Frasers of Philorth family ever since. The seventeenth Lord was a Lieutenant-General in the Army and sat in the House of Lords as a Scottish representative peer from 1807 to 1853. His nephew, the eighteenth Lord, was a Scottish representative peer from 1859 to 1866. His son, the nineteenth Lord, and grandson, the twentieth Lord, were also Scottish representative peers, between 1890 and 1933 and 1935 and 1963, respectively. John Lyon, 8th Lord Glamis
John Lyon, 8th Lord Glamis (died 1578) was a Scottish nobleman, judge and Lord High Chancellor of Scotland. Life He was the eldest son of John Lyon, 7th Lord Glamis, by his wife, Janet Keith, daughter of Robert Keith, Master of Marischal, and sister of William Keith, 4th Earl Marischal. He succeeded as Lord Glamis on the death of his father in 1558. His name first appears in the list of members of the privy council at a meeting of 22 December 1561. On 10 September 1563 the island of Inchkeith was committed to his charge. Glamis supported the marriage of Mary Queen of Scots with Henry Darnley, and took part in the roundabout raid against James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray. History King James V of Scotland visited Frendraught for a week in November 1535. John Stewart, 4th Earl Of Atholl
John Stewart, 4th Earl of Atholl (died 25 April 1579), called the Fair, was a Scottish nobleman and courtier. He was favoured by Mary, Queen of Scots, but later turned against her. Biography Stewart was the son of John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Atholl and Grizel Rattray. He supported the government of the queen dowager Mary of Guise. He wrote to her on 10 June 1554 describing a skirmish in which his cousin George Drummond of Ledcrieff was killed by the lairds of Ardblair, Drumlochie, and Gormok, his followers. Lord Ruthven, sheriff of Perth, and Lord Drummond had searched for these lairds in vain but arrested six innocent poor men, who also depended on him. He hoped she could arrange a fair trial for them in Edinburgh or Perth, especially because Lord Ruthven favoured the Drummonds. George Seton V, 7th Lord Seton (1531–1586), was a Lord of the Parliament of Scotland, Master of the Household of Mary, Queen of Scots, and Provost of Edinburgh. He was the eldest son of George Seton, 6th Lord Seton, and Elizabeth Hay, a daughter of John Hay, 3rd Lord Hay of Yester. His childhood and schooling were in France. James Balfour, Lord Pittendreich (c. 1525–1583) was a Scottish legal writer, judge and politician. Life The son of Andrew Balfour of Montquhanny, he was educated for the legal branch of the Church of Scotland. Balfour was involved in the murder of Cardinal Beaton and the Siege of St Andrews Castle. In June 1547, following the capture of the castle by French forces, he was condemned to be a galley-slave rowing galleys, together with John Knox and others captured at St Andrews, Fife. He was released in 1549, denounced Protestantism, entered the service of Mary of Guise, and was rewarded with important legal appointments. He subsequently joined the Lords of the Congregation, a group of Protestant nobles who opposed the marriage of the young Mary, Queen of Scots, to the Dauphin of France (later to become King Francois II of France), but betrayed their plans. John Maitland, 1st Lord Maitland of Thirlestane (1537 – 3 October 1595), of Lethington, Knight (1581), was Lord Chancellor of Scotland. Life He was the second son of Sir Richard Maitland of Thirlestane, Berwickshire, and Lethington, Haddingtonshire, who settled the lands of Thirlestane upon him, and thereafter sent him abroad for his education. Through the influence of his brother, William Maitland, upon John Maitland's return, he received the offer of the position of Commendator of Kelso Abbey, which he shortly afterwards exchanged with Francis Stewart, later Earl of Bothwell, for the Priory of Coldingham.
