Alex Gardner (footballer)
Alexander Gardner (1877 – 1952) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a right half. Career Born in Leith, Gardner played for local club Leith Athletic then moved to Newcastle United at the end of 1899, making over 300 appearances in the English Football League and FA Cup over the next decade. He won three League titles: 1904–05, 1906–07 and 1908–09 (plus the 1907 Sheriff of London Charity Shield in 1907), and played in three FA Cup finals in 1905, 1906 and 1908, though finishing on the losing side in all of them; he had retired through injury by the time the club first claimed the trophy in 1910. Leith
Leith (; ) is a port area in the north of Edinburgh, Scotland, founded at the mouth of the Water of Leith and is home to the Port of Leith. The earliest surviving historical references are in the royal charter authorising the construction of Holyrood Abbey in 1128 in which it is termed ''Inverlet'' (Inverleith). After centuries of control by Edinburgh, Leith was made a separate burgh in 1833 only to be merged into Edinburgh in 1920. Home Scots v Anglo-Scots was an annual association football trial match organised by the Scottish Football Association between the 1890s and 1920s to examine the abilities of possible players for upcoming full British Home Championship internationals, primarily the 'Auld Enemy' England v Scotland fixture. Selection trials were commonplace among football federations, but this match was unusual in that its regular format consisted of players based in one country (the 'homes') facing a selection of those who had moved to another country (the 'Anglos'), in order to form a combined team to oppose that other country's natives in international play. 1910 FA Cup Final
The 1910 FA Cup final was the 39th FA Cup final. It was contested by Barnsley and Newcastle United. It took two matches to determine a winner. The first took place at Crystal Palace in south London on 23 April 1910 and the second on 28 April at Goodison Park in Liverpool. Road to the Final Match summary The match was a hard fought affair, the ''Manchester Guardian'' commenting that Barnsley played "one man for the man, another for the ball". Barnsley had the better of the play through the first half. Barnsley played a simple game based on long, low passes into space combined with dribbling individual runs which Newcastle found difficult to counter. Barnsley scored 10 minutes before half time. Bartrop picked up a pass from the Barnsley backs and ran up the pitch, passed McWilliam and kicked the ball across the Newcastle goal mouth.
