Aleksandrs Samoilovs (born April 6, 1985) is a Latvian beach volleyball player. Samoilovs and teammate Mārtiņš Pļaviņš, with whom he partnered since 2004, represented Latvia at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. The duo defeated the number 2 seed, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, in their first-round game, in what announcers called "the biggest upset in Olympic beach volleyball history". The Latvian team won its preliminary round group and in round of 16 lost to Austrian team Florian Gosch and Alexander Horst. After the Olympics, Samoilovs and Pļaviņš stopped playing together. Aleksandrs Laime (, ) was a famous Latvian-born explorer. He is most noted for being the first recorded human to reach Angel Falls, located in Venezuela, by foot. He also established, together with Charles Baughan, the tourist camp of Canaima, created solely for the purpose of bringing tourists to Angel Falls. Early life Aleksandrs Laime was born on July 9, 1911, in Riga. He grew up in Grīziņkalns neighborhood, and since early childhood was interested in adventure stories and shipping. At the age of 15, he learned basic principles of sailing in Ķīšezers. Together with some friends, they stole a sailboat and traveled to Liepāja. Aleksandrs Kulakovs
Aleksandrs Kulakovs (born 4 March 1956 in Dedinovo) is a former Latvian football goalkeeper who played for the biggest part of his career for Daugava Rīga. At the age of 15 Kulakovs was the first goalkeeper for Spartak Lukhovitsy. After having seen him play for the Russian SFSR team, Konstantin Beskov offered Kulakovs to move to the reserves squad for FC Dynamo Moscow. In 1974, he moved to VEF Rīga in Latvia and won the Latvian championship in 1974 and 1975. In 1976, he moved to Daugava Rīga, the top club in Soviet Latvia which at the time played in the second division of Soviet football. In the first seasons he had to battle for his position on the field with Laimonis Laizāns and Rolands Žagars but soon he became the undisputed number one goalie for Daugava. Aleksandrs Koliņko (born 18 June 1975) is a Latvian professional football coach and a former player. He is the manager of Latvian Higher League club Super Nova. Club career Koliņko was born in Riga and started his career in 1994, playing for the Skonto Riga reserve team Interskonto, which was renamed Skonto-Metāls in 1995.
