Aldfield
Aldfield is a village and civil parish in the county of North Yorkshire, England, about three miles west of Ripon. It is the closest village to Fountains Abbey and became part of the abbey estate in 1356. The population of the parish was estimated at 80 in 2013. The parish now shares a grouped parish council with the civil parishes of Studley Roger and Lindrick with Studley Royal and Fountains, known as Fountains Abbey Parish Council. St Lawrence's Church, Aldfield, is a grade II* listed building, dating from the 1780s. History Aldfield was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. Sulphurous mineral springs were discovered near Aldfield in around 1698 leading to the establishment of Aldfield Spa. Lord de Grey, on whose land the spring was, adapted an adjacent cottage so that the water could be used there for the treatment of various ailments. William Powell Frith
William Powell Frith (9 January 1819 – 2 November 1909) was an English painter specialising in genre subjects and panoramic narrative works of life in the Victorian era. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1853, presenting ''The Sleeping Model'' as his Diploma work. He has been described as the "greatest British painter of the social scene since Hogarth". Early life William Powell Frith was born in Aldfield, near Ripon in the then West Riding of Yorkshire on 9 January 1819. He had originally intended to be an auctioneer. His mother was Jane Frith, née Powell (1779–1851). Frith was encouraged to take up art by his father, a hotelier in Harrogate. Frith was great uncle and an advisor to the English school portrait painter Henry Keyworth Raine (1872–1932). He moved to London in 1835 where he began his formal art studies at Sass's Academy in Charlotte Street, before attending the Royal Academy Schools. Fountains Abbey
Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercians, Cistercian monasteries in England. It is located approximately south-west of Ripon in North Yorkshire, near the village of Aldfield. Founded in 1132, the abbey operated for 407 years, becoming one of the wealthiest monasteries in England until its Dissolution of the monasteries, dissolution, by order of Henry VIII, in 1539. In 1983, Studley Royal Park including the ruins of Fountains Abbey was purchased by the National Trust. The abbey is maintained by English Heritage. Foundation After a dispute and riot in 1132 at the Benedictine house of St Mary's Abbey, York, 13 monks were expelled, among them Saint Robert of Newminster. Ripon
Ripon () is a cathedral city and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. The city is located at the confluence of two tributaries of the River Ure, the Laver and Skell. Within the boundaries of the historic West Riding of Yorkshire, the city is noted for its main feature, Ripon Cathedral, which is architecturally significant, as well as the Ripon Racecourse and other features such as its market. The city was originally known as ''Inhrypum''. Bede records that Alhfrith, king of the Southern Northumbrian kingdom of Deira, gave land at Ripon to Eata of Hexham to build a monastery and the abbot transferred some of his monks there, including a young Saint Cuthbert who was guest-master at Ripon abbey. Grantley, North Yorkshire
Grantley is a village (also known as High Grantley) and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It lies west of Ripon. The parish also includes the hamlet of Low Grantley. The population of the parish was estimated at 130 in 2013. The parish lies on the north bank of the River Skell, in a well-wooded valley. Grantley Sawmills is a local employer, just outside the parish on the south bank of the river. Grantley Hall, on the north bank of the river, is an 18th-century Grade II* listed building, built by Thomas Norton and his son Fletcher Norton, 1st Baron Grantley. The toponym, first mentioned in about 1030, is Old English, and means "clearing of a man called Grante". Grantley was historically a township in the parish of Ripon in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Studley Roger is a small village and civil parish in the county of North Yorkshire, England, and it is about 1 mile west of the cathedral city of Ripon. The population of the civil parish was 175 at the 2011 Census. The parish now shares a grouped parish council with the civil parishes of Aldfield and Lindrick with Studley Royal and Fountains, known as Fountains Abbey Parish Council. Neighbouring the village of Studley Roger is Studley Royal Park which contains the remains of Fountains Abbey and is a World Heritage Site. Lindrick With Studley Royal And Fountains
Lindrick with Studley Royal and Fountains is a civil parish in North Yorkshire, England, west of Ripon. There is no village in the parish. The population of the parish was estimated at 50 in 2016. The southern half of the civil parish comprises most of Studley Royal Park, an estate which since 1767 has included the ruins and estate of Fountains Abbey. The estate is now the property of the National Trust and is open to the public. The northern half of the parish includes the farming settlements of High Lindrick and Low Lindrick. Lindrick and Studley Royal were historically extra-parochial areas in Claro Wapentake in the West Riding of Yorkshire. They became a civil parish in 1858.
