Alajärvi Library
The Alajärvi Library is the municipal public library of the town of Alajärvi in Finland. The first public library in Alajärvi was established in 1866, and operated as an adjunct to the Alajärvi Church. The current library was built in 1991 and opened to public in 1992. It is notable for being based on an original 1966 design by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, although it was only completed after his death in 1976 by architects working in the Aalto design bureau. Alajärvi is home to eight buildings designed by Aalto, with the library forming part of the Aalto-designed public and administrative buildings complex. Alajärvi (; ) is a town and municipality of Finland. It is located in the South Ostrobothnia region. The town has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. Alajärvi Church
Alajärvi Church, also known as the Church of Gabriel ( Finnish: ''Gabrielin kirkko''), is the main Lutheran church in the city of Alajärvi, Finland. Architecture The church was designed by the leading architect operating in Finland at the time, Carl Ludvig Engel, completed in 1836 and consecrated in 1841. It is designed in the neoclassical style, and constructed of timber, under a tarred wood shingle roof. There is a standalone bell tower next to the church. The main altarpiece was created in 1907 by the Finnish, Alajärvi-born post-impressionist artist Verner Thomé, and depicts Jesus's agony in the Gethsemane. In 1896, the church was refurbished, adding an internal balcony with seating, bringing the total seating capacity to 1,200, although in its current configuration it seats 1,000. Alvar Aalto
Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (; 3 February 1898 – 11 May 1976) was a Finnish architect and designer. His work includes architecture, furniture, textiles and glassware, as well as sculptures and paintings. He never regarded himself as an artist, seeing painting and sculpture as "branches of the tree whose trunk is architecture." An alvar is a biological environment based on a limestone plain with thin or no soil and, as a result, sparse grassland vegetation. Often flooded in the spring, and affected by drought in midsummer, alvars support a distinctive group of prairie-like plants. Most alvars occur either in northern Europe or around the Great Lakes in North America. This stressed habitat supports a community of rare plants and animals, including species more commonly found on prairie grasslands. Lichen and mosses are common species. Trees and bushes are absent or severely stunted. The primary cause of alvars is the shallow exposed bedrock.
