Al Akins
Albert George Akins (June 13, 1921 – August 29, 1995) was a professional American football halfback and defensive back who played three seasons for the Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills and Brooklyn Dodgers in the All-America Football Conference. Akins was a native of Spokane, Washington and attended Washington State University and later the University of Washington, where he played football and basketball. He was a key member of a University of Washington team that lost the Rose Bowl Game in 1943 to the University of Southern California. Akins played for the Browns in 1946, and subsequently joined Buffalo and Brooklyn. He won an AAFC championship with the Browns, although he did not play in the championship game due to an injury. After his playing career, Akins became an assistant football coach at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Halfback (American Football)
A halfback (HB) is an offensive position in American football, whose duties involve lining up in the offensive backfield and carrying the ball on most rushing plays, i.e. a running back. When the principal ball carrier lines up deep in the backfield, and especially when that player is placed behind another player (usually a blocking back), as in the I formation, that player is instead referred to as a tailback. Sometimes the halfback can catch the ball from the backfield on short passing plays as they are an eligible receiver. Occasionally, they line up as additional wide receivers. List Of All-Pacific-12 Conference Men's Basketball Teams
The All-Pac-12 men's basketball team is an annual Pac-12 Conference honor bestowed on the best players in the conference following every college basketball season. Pac-12 coaches select a 10-player first team and a five-player second team. There were two five-man teams from 1956 though 1979, followed by one 10-man first team from 1980 through 2008. For one year in 2008, there were three five-man teams selected. During the final week of the regular season, Pac-12 coaches nominate up to three players from their team to be placed on the ballot for consideration. Coaches submit their votes by the Sunday after the season ends and cannot vote for their own players. Previously, a player needed to be selected on 50 percent of the ballots to be on the team. Jim Hardy
James Francis Hardy (April 24, 1923 – August 16, 2019) was an American football quarterback. He was born in Los Angeles. High school career Hardy attended and played high school football at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles. College career Hardy played college football at the University of Southern California. He was voted most valuable player of the 1945 Rose Bowl game, won by USC 25-0 over Tennessee. Professional career Hardy was drafted in the first round (eighth overall) of the 1945 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. He played in the National Football League between 1946 and 1952. He made the Pro Bowl in 1950. Hardy is perhaps most famous for throwing an NFL-record eight interceptions in a single game, as well as for the worst touchdown pass-interception differential in a single game (-8), in a 45-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on September 24, 1950. 1944 Rose Bowl
The 1944 Rose Bowl was the thirtieth edition of the college football bowl game, played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, on Saturday, January 1. This was the only Rose Bowl game with teams from the same conference (Pacific Coast), necessitated by the travel restrictions imposed by the war effort. It determined the champion of the PCC for the 1943 season and the USC Trojans shut out the Washington Huskies 29–0 in a one-sided game. USC backup quarterback Jim Hardy threw three touchdown passes to lead the Trojans to their seventh Rose Bowl victory and eighth PCC championship. The 1943 Washington Huskies football team was an American football team that represented the University of Washington during the 1943 college football season. In its second season under head coach Ralph Welch, the team compiled a 4–1 record, finished in third place in the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC), was ranked twelfth in the final AP Poll, lost to USC in the Rose Bowl, and outscored its opponents 150 to 61. Jack Tracy was the team captain. With manpower shortages on campuses due to World War II, the other five members of the PCC's Northern Division did not field teams this season (or the next); Washington's sole conference game was on New Year's Day in the Rose Bowl.
