Akdeniz Koruma Derneği
Akdeniz Koruma Derneği (known in English as the Mediterranean Conservation Society) is a Turkish marine conservation organization. The Society has been involved in the establishment of marine protected areas in Gökova, and monitoring of endangered Mediterranean monk seals. In 2013 and 2017, president Zafer Kizilkaya was granted a Whitley Award in recognition of the organization's contribution to conservation. Marine conservation, also known as ocean conservation, is the protection and preservation of ecosystems in oceans and seas through planned management in order to prevent the over-exploitation of these marine resources. Marine conservation is informed by the study of marine plants and animal resources and ecosystem functions and is driven by response to the manifested negative effects seen in the environment such as species loss, habitat degradation and changes in ecosystem functions and focuses on limiting human-caused damage to marine ecosystems, restoring damaged marine ecosystems, and preserving vulnerable species and ecosystems of the marine life. A marine protected area (MPA) is a protected area of the world's seas, oceans, estuaries or in the US, the Great Lakes. These marine areas can come in many forms ranging from wildlife refuges to research facilities. MPAs restrict human activity for a conservation purpose, typically to protect natural or cultural resources. Such marine resources are protected by local, state, territorial, native, regional, national, or international authorities and differ substantially among and between nations. This variation includes different limitations on development, fishing practices, fishing seasons and catch limits, moorings and bans on removing or disrupting marine life. Gökova
Gökova is a neighbourhood of the municipality and district of Ula, Muğla Province, Turkey. Its population is 2,098 (2022). Before the 2013 reorganisation, it was a town (''belde''). It lies at the head of the Gulf of Gökova in a plain also known as Gökova. The ancient Carian city of Idyma, with its acropolis and necropolis, is located above Kozlukuyu Mahallesi (Kozlukuyu Neighbourhood) at the northern end of Gökova town, not at nearby Akyaka as often incorrectly stated. Mediterranean Monk Seal
The Mediterranean monk seal (''Monachus monachus'') is a monk seal belonging to the family Phocidae. , it is estimated that fewer than 700 individuals survive in three or four isolated subpopulations in the Mediterranean, (especially) in the Aegean Sea, the archipelago of Madeira and the Cabo Blanco area in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. It is believed to be the world's rarest pinniped species. It is the only extant species in the genus ''Monachus''. Zafer Kızılkaya
Zafer Ali Kızılkaya (born 1969) is a Turkish marine advocate and engineer who is credited for expanding marine protected areas (MPAs) along Turkey's Mediterranean coast. Kızılkaya was born in Ankara in 1969. Growing up, he watched Jacques Cousteau documentaries which inspired his admiration for the sea. He has a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Middle East Technical University. After graduating from college, Kızılkaya took interest in commercial deep sea diving and underwater photography. He took his interests to the Pacific Ocean and spent many years exploring its waters while being a marine photographer and researcher in Indonesia. He went on to receive a master's degree in Coastal and Harbor engineering from Middle East Technical University.
