Aillik ( )) was a fishing and trading settlement located north of Makkovik, Labrador. The community is named after the bay in which it is located. ''Aillik'' is an Inuit term meaning "a place having sleeves", so named because Aillik Bay is shaped with two branches at its head. Makkovik, Newfoundland And Labrador
Makkovik ( Inuit: ''Maggovik'') is a town in Labrador in eastern Canada. It had 365 residents in 2021. The main industry is snow crabbing and there is a fishing cooperative. Makkovik is only accessible by air or sea. History The Makkovik area has been inhabited by the Inuit since 1400 or earlier. Some early European settlers included Antoine Perrault and Jean-Baptiste Jacques, French Canadian fur traders who set up trading posts at nearby Kaipokok Bay. Another earlier settler to the area was Charles McNeil, a Scottish fisherman who married a woman from Clarke's Beach and established a fishing post at Island Harbour. A Scottish fur trader named George Lyall settled near Island Harbour in the 1850s while a Welsh settler named Thomas Evans settled at Ben's Cove. Aillik Bay
Aillik Bay (formerly Ailik Bay) is a bay on the coast of Labrador in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The ghost town of Aillik is located on the western shore of the bay. The area around the bay is notable for the widely distributed lamprophyric dykes. Geography Aillik Bay is formed by a narrow peninsula projecting northward from the mainland, separating it from the entrance to Kaipokok Bay to the west, while Makkovik Bay is to the east. Cape Aillik, on the northern extremity of an islet, marks the western entrance point of Aillik Bay. The western shore of the bay is steep, with Summer Cove about south of Cape Aillik. The eastern shore of the bay is bordered by boulders. The eastern entrance point for the bay is Cape Makkovik, which is a steep bluff rising to round summits connected with the inland mountain ranges.
