Aerith
, transliterated as Aeris Gainsborough in the English releases of ''Final Fantasy VII'' and ''Final Fantasy Tactics'', is a Character (arts), character in Square (video game company), Square's (now Square Enix) role-playing video game ''Final Fantasy VII''. She was designed by Tetsuya Nomura with influence from Yoshinori Kitase, Hironobu Sakaguchi and Yoshitaka Amano. She is one of the main characters of ''Final Fantasy VII'', a young woman allied with the eco-terrorist organization AVALANCHE. Over the course of the story, AVALANCHE begin to pursue the game's antagonist Sephiroth (Final Fantasy), Sephiroth, and it is revealed that Aerith is the last surviving Cetra, or "Ancient", one of the planet's oldest races. She is ultimately murdered by Sephiroth. She has also appeared in the ''Compilation of Final Fantasy VII'' and ''Kingdom Hearts'' series. She is voiced in Japanese by Maaya Sakamoto. is a 1997 role-playing video game developed by Square (video game company), Square for the PlayStation (console), PlayStation. The seventh main installment in the ''Final Fantasy'' series, it was released in Japan by Square and internationally by Sony Computer Entertainment, becoming the first game in the main series to have a PAL region, PAL release. The game's story follows Cloud Strife, a mercenary who joins an Eco-terrorism, eco-terrorist organization to stop a world-controlling megacorporation from using the planet's life essence as an energy source. Ensuing events send Cloud and his allies in pursuit of Sephiroth (Final Fantasy), Sephiroth, a superhuman who seeks to wound the planet and harness its healing power in order to be reborn as a god.
