Adolfo Constenla Umaña
Adolfo Constenla Umaña (January 14, 1948, in San José, Costa Rica – November 7, 2013) was a Costa Rican philologist and linguist who specialized in the indigenous languages of Central America. He is especially known as a leading scholar on Chibchan languages, and some sources referred to him as the "father of Chibchan linguistics." Education He studied Spanish philology at the University of Costa Rica. In 1981, he graduated with a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania with a thesis on the comparative phonology of the Chibchan languages. Career Beginning in 1970, he worked as a teacher and researcher at the School of Philology, Linguistics, and Literature at the University of Costa Rica. He was promoted to Professor in 1983. In 1969 Constenla began a life-long working relationship when, at the recommendation of Arturo Agüero, he visited the Malecu (Guatuso) people of northern Costa Rica. Guaymí Language
Guaymí, or Ngäbere, also known as Movere, Chiriquí, and Valiente, is a Chibchan language spoken by the Indigenous Ngäbe people in Panama and Costa Rica. The people refer to themselves as ''Ngäbe'' () and to their language as ''Ngäbere'' . The Ngäbes are the most populous of Panama's several Indigenous peoples. The language is centered in Panama within the semi-autonomous Indigenous reservation known as the Comarca Ngäbe-Buglé. Carlos Gagini (18651925) was a Costa Rican intellectual, philologist writer, esperantist and linguist. He was born in Costa Rica, in a family of Swiss descent.
