Above Ground
Above Ground was a band from Christchurch, New Zealand formed in 1983. History Above Ground developed out of the friendship of the four members: Bill Direen (Guitar/Vocals), Carol Woodward (Keyboards), Maryrose Wilkinson (Bass/Vocals) and Stuart Page (Drums). The group played locally and at the Punakaiki Music Festival (West Coast, New Zealand); and would have been forgotten like a lot of bands had Page not recorded nearly every practice and concert and organised the "Gone AIWA" cassette (1983), re-released in 2011 on vinyl by Siltbreeze. Historian of NZ music, John Dix, mentions the group in his encyclopaedia of NZ Rock and Roll Stranded in Paradise.'In December came Dance of Death by the Soluble Fish Ensemble, and in July he cassetteGone AIWA, by yet another new band – Above Ground. Bill Direen
William Direen (born 1957) is a New Zealand writer and performer. He graduated from Canterbury University (Christchurch) with the John Tinline Prize (1980) and M.A. Hons. (1st). His masters thesis was titled ''The influence of Japanese noh, Balinese dance-drama and the Kathakali on four twentieth century western playwrights''. He directed Blue Ladder Theatre at 87 Cashel Street, Christchurch, and later produced a series of experimental "psycho-musicals" in Wellington. Later writing (1994–present) ranges from criticism and speculative fiction to poetry sometimes performed with collaborating musicians. From 2006 to 2017 he edited the trans-cultural literary annual ''Percutio'', "dedicated to aspects of the creative process and to works that bridge cultures". He edited a special anthology in 2021 to oppose cost-cutting depletion of New Zealand National Library's non-NZ books. Maryrose Crook
Maryrose Crook (née Wilkinson) is a musician and artist from New Zealand. Crook and her husband, Brian, formed the band The Renderers in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1989. The band has released music with New Zealand company Flying Nun Records and American labels Merge, Siltbreeze and Drag City, and have toured New Zealand twice as the backing band for American alt-folk star Bonnie Prince Billy. In 1993 Crook moved to Port Chalmers and exhibited her first paintings in a cafe in Dunedin in 1995; within a year she was invited to exhibit at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. She is known for creating large-scale canvases depicting surreal, other-worldly landscapes. Her work is held in public and private collections in New Zealand, Australia, Germany and the United States. Stuart Page
Stuart Page (born 2 November 1957) is a New Zealand photographer, designer, filmmaker and drummer. Early life and education Page was born on 2 November 1957. He graduated from Ilam School of Fine Arts in Christchurch with a Diploma in Fine Arts (Hons) in Photography in 1980. Work Page has worked with artists on the Flying Nun label and many lesser known counterculture groups of his country. After travel to U.S.A. (May-Nov 1982) his screenprinting work took on a new vigour that brought him into contact with many lo-fi music groups. Apart from his photography and printing work, his main concern has been documentary film-making and his music group The Axemen. He has produced and directed over forty 16mm and digital music videos & shot several 16mm and digital short films and digital video documentaries, as well as 16mm and 35mm TVCs. Siltbreeze
Siltbreeze is an American independent record label based in Philadelphia. It is known for its eclectic roster of artists and releases of experimental, noise, folk, and rock-based music. Founded in 1989 by Ohio native Tom Lax, the label evolved out of a zine of the same name which he published from 1987 until 1992. The first label release was a Halo of Flies EP, and soon after, Lax produced a steady stream of record releases by The Dead C, The Gibson Bros., Sebadoh, The Strapping Fieldhands, Harry Pussy, Jim Shepard, and Mike Rep among others throughout the early and mid 1990s. The label slowed its output toward the later 1990s until the mid and late 2000s.
