Abe Bailey Nature Reserve
Abe Bailey Nature Reserve is a protected area in the Merafong City Local Municipality in Gauteng, South Africa. It is situated near Carletonville, beside the township of Khutsong on the West Rand. It is about in size. Fauna Over 280 species of birds have been recorded in the reserve, including common sightings of African Fish Eagle and the summer visiting Western Osprey, thousands of Flamingos visit the wetland for a few weeks a year, Yellow-billed Storks have been recorded breeding in the area (one of a few known breeding sites outside of the Okavango delta), rare sightings of both Cape and White-backed Vultures as well as Marabou Storks, Martial Eagle and Giant Eagle-owl. Carletonville
Carletonville is a town in Gauteng and the seat of the Merafong City Local Municipality in the West Rand District Municipality in Gauteng, South Africa, just north of the richest gold-mining area in the world. At 3,749 m, Western Deep Levels holds the record for the world's deepest gold mine. History Developed by various mining companies from 1937 onwards, Carletonville was named after the long-serving mining director of Consolidated Gold Fields, Guy Carleton Jones, but was not officially incorporated until 1959. Upon reaching a population of 2000 1967, (mostly white inhabitants of the apartheid era) it became officially recognised and celebrated as a provincial town. Merafong City Local Municipality
Merafong City Municipality (; ; ; ) is a local municipality in the West Rand District Municipality, in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Its boundaries encloses some of the richest gold mines in the world. It is situated about 65 km from Johannesburg and is serviced by a number of major roads, including the N12 from Johannesburg to Kimberley and the N14 (the main road between Gauteng and Vryburg via Ventersdorp). Khutsong
Khutsong is a township on the West Rand of South Africa, and scene of widespread unrest starting in February 2006. It is situated north-west of the town of Carletonville, in the Merafong City Local Municipality of the Gauteng province, just west of the Abe Bailey Nature Reserve. With a terrible history of violence and gangsterism, the main factors causing crime rates to spike up from 2011 until late 2019 are mainly high poverty rates, municipality mismanagement and corruption and the lack of employment/job creating opportunities. West Rand
The West Rand is the urban western part of the Witwatersrand that is functionally merged with the Johannesburg conurbation. This area became settled by Europeans after a gold-bearing reef discovered in 1886 and sparked the gold rush that gave rise to the establishment of Johannesburg. The West Rand extends from Randfontein in the west to Roodepoort in the east, and includes the town of Krugersdorp.
