Abadan Refinery
The Abadan refinery ( ''Pālāyeshgāh-e Ābādān'') is an oil refinery in Abadan, Iran near the coast of the Persian Gulf. History Built by the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (later BP) on the basis of a lease obtained in 1909, it was completed in 1912 as a pipeline terminus, and was one of the world's largest oil refineries. In 1927, oil exports from Abadan totalled nearly 4.5 million tons. Its nationalisation in 1951 prompted the Abadan Crisis and ultimately the toppling of the democratically elected prime minister Mossaddegh. The refinery was largely destroyed in September 1980 by Iraq during the initial stages of the Iraqi invasion of Iran's Khuzestan province, triggering the Iran–Iraq War. It had a capacity of 635,000 b/d in 1980 and formed a refinery complex with important petrochemical plants. John Woolfenden Williamson (1869–1950) was a British writer about industrial networks in the first half of the 20th century. Williamson was unable to complete a medical degree at the University of Edinburgh due to financial difficulties and became a teacher. Siege Of Abadan
The siege of Abadan was the encirclement of the city by Iraqi forces beginning in November 1980. The city had already been under almost daily bombardment since the early days of the war, which began the previous September. Abadan Island was the site of the Abadan Refinery, one of the world's largest oil refineries. Horace Walter Rigden
Horace Walter Rigden, OBE, (2 April 1898 – 1986) was an English chemist and oil industry executive who managed the Anglo-Persian oil refinery at Abadan in Iran during the 1930s and the Second World War, receiving the Order of the British Empire in 1945 for his service. Early life Horace Walter Rigden was born in Highgate, London, on 2 April 1898 to Walter Thomas Rigden, an advertising contractor, and Jane Rigden. Horace had a sister Amy and a brother Thomas. He worked as a laboratory assistant and after the outbreak of the First World War joined the Royal Flying Corps on 19 August 1915 where he served as an Air Mechanic 2nd Class. On 1 April 1918 he joined the Royal Air Force where he served as a Second Lieutenant. He was discharged on 5 June 1918. His advanced education was delayed by the war and he enrolled at the University of London, graduating in 1922 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
