ABC Goldfields–Esperance
ABC Goldfields–Esperance is an ABC Local Radio station based in Kalgoorlie. The station broadcasts to the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia, including the towns of Esperance, Coolgardie, Kambalda and Norseman. The station was formally opened by the then State Member for Kalgoorlie, Herbert Henry Styants, on 10 December 1936. The station began broadcasting as 6GF from the first floor of the Post Office building in Hannan Street. Later the station moved its studios to the Salvation Army Citadel, prior to moving to premises on the corner of Porter and Brookman Streets. The station is currently located at 353 Hannan Street. The transmitter at Esperance (callsign 6ED) was switched on in 1966. There are also a number of low power FM transmitters. When local programs are not broadcast the station is a relay of 720 ABC Perth. Norseman, Western Australia
Norseman is a town located in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia along the Coolgardie-Esperance Highway, east of Perth and above sea level. It is also the starting point of the Eyre Highway, and the last major town in Western Australia before the South Australian border to the east. At the 2021 census, Norseman had a population of 562, of whom 17% were Aboriginal. History The quest for gold led to the establishment of Norseman, on the traditional land of the Ngadju. Today there are a number of small goldmining operations in the area but only the Central Norseman Gold Corporation can be considered a major producer. Gold was first found in the Norseman area in 1892, about 10 km south of the town, near Dundas. The "Dundas Field" was proclaimed in August 1893 and a townsite gazetted there. ABC Radio Perth (call sign: 6WF) is the on-air identifier of a radio station located in Perth, Western Australia, operated by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and broadcasting at 720 kHz AM. Hannan Street is the main street in the goldfields town of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and the easternmost section of Great Eastern Highway. It is long and named after one of the founding fathers of the town, Paddy Hannan. It is the location of many historic buildings and establishments. Herbert Henry Styants (20 October 1893 – 2 December 1982) was an Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1936 to 1956, representing the seat of Kalgoorlie. He served as a minister in the government of Albert Hawke. Styants was born in Collie, a town in Western Australia's South West region. After leaving school, he was employed by Western Australian Government Railways, working variously as an engine cleaner, a fireman, and then a driver.
