74th Venice International Film Festival
The 74th annual Venice International Film Festival was held from 30 August to 9 September 2017. The jury president was announced as the actress Annette Bening on 5 July 2017. '' Downsizing'', directed by Alexander Payne, was selected to open the festival. The Golden Lion, the highest prize given by the festival, was awarded to '' The Shape of Water'', directed by Guillermo del Toro. A new section for virtual-reality (VR) films was introduced in this edition of the festival, as part of the Official Selection. 22 films were selected for the first-ever competition for films made in VR, while several more were presented in out-of-competition subsections. Downsizing (film)
''Downsizing'' is a 2017 American science fiction film, science fiction comedy-drama film directed by Alexander Payne, written by Payne and Jim Taylor (writer), Jim Taylor, and starring Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau, and Kristen Wiig. It tells the story of Paul Safrânek, who decides to undergo a recently-invented procedure to shrink his body so he can start a new life in an experimental community, which he ends up doing alone when his wife backs out at the last minute; his journey takes an unexpected turn after he befriends an impoverished activist. Principal photography for the film began in Ontario, Canada, on April 1, 2016. Michel Franco
Michel Franco (born 28 August 1979) is a Mexican film director, screenwriter and producer. He is best known for his film '' After Lucia'' that won the Prize Un Certain Regard at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. His films typically deal with themes of dysfunctional families, in particular Mexican upper classes. His 2020 film '' New Order'' was received with an overwhelming backlash due to accusations of racism towards lower classes in Mexico to the point that Franco had to make a public apology in social media as he claimed the film was the subject of "reverse racism". Rebecca Zlotowski (born 21 April 1980) is a French film director and screenwriter. Education A former student at prestigious Ecole Normale Supérieure, Rebecca Zlotowski received her teaching qualification in French modern literature in 2003. She graduated in 2007 at la Femis in scriptwriting section. Career Her first feature film, '' Belle Épine'', is her graduation project at La Fémis, written under the guidance of her mentor Lodge Kerrigan. Gianni Amelio (born 20 January 1945) is an Italian film director. Early life Amelio was born in San Pietro di Magisano, province of Catanzaro, Calabria. His father moved to Argentina soon after his birth. He spent his youth and adolescence with his mother and his grandmother. The absence of a paternal figures will be a constant in Amelio's future works. Yonfan (born 14 October 1947) is a Hong Kong film director and photographer. Biography He was born in Wuhan, Hubei, Republic of China. As the Yang family emigrated from mainland China, they lived first in Hong Kong for 3 years, and then moved to Taiwan when Yonfan was 5 years old. He spent most of his childhood and adolescence in Taichung, Taiwan, and returned to Hong Kong in 1964 as a 17-year-old man to work as a photographer, but left for the United States in 1968 to study film.
