''REMTV'' is a six-disc DVD box set collecting appearances by American alternative rock band R.E.M. on MTV and related channels, from 1983 to 2008, released November 24, 2014. The collection was compiled by the former band members as they looked through all of the MTV film footage in their vault to prepare the release of '' Unplugged: The Complete 1991 and 2001 Sessions''. The box set includes a new documentary on the band, titled ''R.E.M. by MTV'', by Alex Young (producer, director) and Dave Leopold (editor). The documentary is a collage of various R.E.M. interviews and appearances not only on MTV, but on several programs. This film was aired in theaters as a special engagement on May 19, 2015. Alternative Rock
Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a category of rock music that evolved from the independent music underground of the 1970s. Alternative rock acts achieved mainstream success in the 1990s with the likes of the grunge subgenre in the United States, and the Britpop and shoegaze subgenres in the United Kingdom and Ireland. King Of The Road (song)
"King of the Road" is a song written by country singer Roger Miller, who first recorded it in November 1964. The lyrics tell of the day-to-day life of a traveling hobo, who despite having little money (a "man of means by no means"), revels in his freedom, describing himself humorously and cynically as the "king of the road". It was Miller's fifth single for Smash Records. The song won Miller 5 Grammy Awards in 1966. History The crossover record reached number one on the ''Billboard'' US Country chart, number four on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, and number one on the Easy Listening surveys. It was also number one in the UK Singles Chart and in Norway. Gary Zekley
Alan Gary Zekley (also known as Brandon Chase; January 4, 1943 – June 19, 1996) was an American West Coast record producer and songwriter associated with 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s bands and songs in the bubblegum, rock and roll, sunshine pop, and surf genres. He co-wrote " Sooner or Later", a top-10 hit for the Grass Roots in 1971. R.E.M. recorded his song "Superman" on their 1986 album ''Lifes Rich Pageant''. The song was originally recorded by the Clique. Zekley wrote or produced songs by bands such as Big Pig, Dick and Dee Dee, Jan and Dean, Sweathog, Spanky and Our Gang, the Ragamuffins, the Mamas & the Papas, the Fun and Games, and the Yellow Balloon, who had a 1967 ''Billboard'' #25 hit with a Zekley-penned song of the same name. Zekley produced the Yellow Balloon's eponymous album under the pseudonym Yodar Critch—taken from a statue featured in the TV show ''Our Miss Brooks''. "Superman" is a 1969 song by the Texas band The Clique, made more famous in 1986 when it was recorded by R.E.M. Roger Troutman also recorded a version in 1997 that was included on the 2002 re-release of his debut album ''The Many Facets of Roger''. It was written by Mitchell Bottler and Gary Zekley and originally released as the first single off of The Clique's first album for White Whale Records. R.E.M. recorded it for their fourth album, ''Lifes Rich Pageant''. It was released as a single and received a fair amount of radio play, but did not chart on the main U.S. singles chart, though it did reach #17 on ''Billboard'' magazine's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Wendell Gee
"Wendell Gee" is a song by the American alternative rock band R.E.M. that was released as the third and final single from the group's third studio album ''Fables of the Reconstruction'' in 1985. It was released in Europe only, in two 7" and two 12" formats. Instrumentally, the song was almost entirely composed by Mike Mills, with Michael Stipe supplying the lyric and vocal (Mills' backing vocal is ''"Gonna miss you, boy"''). Peter Buck hated the song when it was initially recorded, claiming its only redeeming feature was his banjo solo, and it was only included on the album at the last minute. With Buck's objections being such, the song was very rarely played live, even on the European leg of the Reconstruction tour where it had been released as a single. Buck has since revised his view of the song. The subject of the song died just after R.E.M. completed their 1995 world tour in support of the previous year's ''Monster''. He was 69. Michael Lachowski
Michael Scott Lachowski was the bass guitar player for Pylon, a band from Athens, Georgia. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia, and attended the University of Georgia art school. He and his roommate Randy Bewley formed Pylon, recruiting Curtis Crowe as a drummer, and Vanessa Briscoe Hay, a fellow student at the University of Georgia. They recorded the single " Cool/Dub", an album '' Gyrate'', an EP, another album ''Chomp'', and two singles. Pylon toured the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom before breaking up in 1983. They returned to tour again in 1988, and recorded another album, ''Chain'', in 1990, before breaking up again in 1991. Pylon reformed in 2005 and occasionally performed until 2009, when Bewley died. Their first album, '' Gyrate Plus'', was reissued on October 16, 2007, by DFA Records, New York City. In 2009, '' Chomp More'' was also reissued by DFA Records. Curtis Crowe
Curtis Hudgins Crowe is the drummer for the Athens, Georgia, rock band Pylon. He is a native of Marietta, Georgia, and is the middle child of five children. Crowe moved to Athens to attend the University of Georgia art school. His sister Rhett Crowe was later the bass player for the band Guadalcanal Diary, a fixture on the college music scene back in the 1980s and 1990s. He has also been involved in several other music projects such as Strictly American and Dodd Ferrelle and the Tinfoil Stars. Career In early 1979, Crowe and his friend Bill Tabor sat and listened to Michael Lachowski and Randy Bewley play the same riff over and over in their practice space which was below his apartment in downtown Athens–the original 40 Watt Club, named for a single bulb on a wire that hung overhead. Vanessa Briscoe Hay
Vanessa Briscoe Hay (born October 18, 1955) is an American singer for the Athens, Georgia bands Pylon, Supercluster and Pylon Reenactment Society. Biography Born to a textile worker and a housewife in Atlanta, Georgia, Hay attended elementary and high school in Dacula, Georgia, prior to moving to Athens to attend college. Hay graduated from the University of Georgia art school in 1978. She became the singer for Pylon after being auditioned by Michael Lachowski, Randy Bewley, and Curtis Crowe. A few months later Pylon were the opening band for the British group the Gang of Four in New York City, at the club Hurrah, after being brought to the club's attention by Kate Pierson and Fred Schneider of the B-52's. Danny Beard from Atlanta helped Pylon to record their first single " Cool/Dub" in 1979 at Stone Mountain Studios in Atlanta, and Pylon began to tour the US. Randy Bewley
Randall Eugene Bewley (July 25, 1955 – February 25, 2009) was the guitarist for the Athens, Georgia-based band Pylon. Life and career Bewley was born in Bradenton, Florida. He lived in Sarasota, Florida, Washington, D.C., and near Atlanta, Georgia, while growing up. Bewley attended the University of Georgia's Lamar Dodd School of Art where he met Michael Lachowski, a fellow art student. They became roommates and decided to form a band. He and Lachowski, along with fellow art students Vanessa Briscoe Hay and Curtis Crowe, formed Pylon, having their first performance in 1979. On their first trip to New York City, they were reviewed in ''Interview Magazine''. Bewley was a very influential guitarist and used the guitar to create not just notes, but interesting sounds as well. Pylon recorded three albums, three singles and one EP. "Driver 8" is the second single from American musical group R.E.M.'s third album, ''Fables of the Reconstruction'', released in September 1985. The song peaked at number 22 on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The song refers to the Southern Crescent, a passenger train that was operated by the Southern Railroad until 1979, and continues today (with fewer stops) as the Amtrak ''Crescent''. The music video shows Chessie System trains running around Clifton Forge, Virginia. Guitarist Peter Buck admitted in the liner notes for the band's 2003 compilation album '' In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988–2003'' that the verse chords for the song " Imitation of Life" were unintentionally taken from the verse chords of "Driver 8."
