68th Composite Wing
The 68th Composite Wing was a United States Army Air Forces organization. It was a command and control organization of Fourteenth Air Force that fought in the China Burma India Theater of World War II. The wing was formed as an expansion of the Fourteenth Air Force Forward Echelon in 1943, becoming the command and control organization for the 23d Fighter Group and 308th Bomb Group. It served in combat from December 1943 until August 1945. The mixed unit was composed of fighters, fighter bombers and heavy bombers, flown by both American and Chinese airmen. The Fourteenth Air Force (14 AF; Air Forces Strategic) was a numbered air force of the United States Air Force Space Command (AFSPC). It was headquartered at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. China Burma India Theater (CBI) was the United States military designation during World War II for the China and Southeast Asian or India–Burma (IBT) theaters. Kunming Wujiaba International Airport was the main airport serving Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, China. It is located south-east of metropolitan Kunming. Luliang Airfield
Luliang Air Base is a People's Liberation Army Air Force Base, located about 5 kilometers southwest of Luliang in Yunnan Province, China. History During World War II, the base was used by the United States Army Air Forces Fourteenth Air Force as part of the China Defensive Campaign (1942–1945). The airfield was the primary home of the 23d Fighter Group (Flying Tigers), and its command and control organization, the 68th Composite Wing beginning in September 1944 until the end of the war in 1945. Secondary USAAF units assigned to the base were P-38 Lightning reconnaissance aircraft that flew photo-recon missions over Japanese-held territory; and C-47 Skytrain transports which moved personnel and materiel in and out of the base, along with evacuating casualties to rear areas.
