6th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Spanish–American War)
The 6th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment was reconstituted in early 1898 as a unit of volunteers to fight in the Spanish–American War, under the command of Colonel Edmund Rice. The unit should not be confused with the 6th Infantry Regiment of Regulars, which also fought in the war, though in the Philippines and Cuba. 6th Massachusetts deployed to Puerto Rico, landed at Guanica and worked its way east and inland to Ponce and Arecibo. In October of that year, it returned to Massachusetts and was disbanded. Spanish–American War
The Spanish–American War (April 21 – August 13, 1898) was fought between Restoration (Spain), Spain and the United States in 1898. It began with the sinking of the USS Maine (1889), USS ''Maine'' in Havana Harbor in Cuba, and resulted in the U.S. acquiring sovereignty over Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, and establishing a protectorate over Cuba. Edmund Rice (Medal Of Honor)
Edmund Rice (December 2, 1842 – July 20, 1906) was a soldier in the United States Army and a Medal of Honor recipient who achieved the rank of Brigadier General. Early life Rice was born 2 December 1842 in Brighton, Massachusetts to Moses Maynard Rice and Eliza (Damon) Rice. 6th Infantry Regiment
The 6th Infantry Regiment ("Regulars") was formed 11 January 1812. Zachary Taylor, later the twelfth President of the United States, was a commander of the unit. The motto, "Regulars, By God!" derives from the Battle of Chippawa, in which British Major General Phineas Riall noticed that the approaching regiment wore militia uniforms. Having defeated militia troops in the Battle of Queenston Heights, Riall assumed another easy victory. Instead, the American regiment pressed the attack. According to the memoirs of regimental commander Winfield Scott, later commanding general of the United States Army, when Riall realized his error, he remarked "Why, these are regulars!."
