The 56th annual Venice International Film Festival was held between 1 and 11 September 1999. The Golden Lion was awarded to '' Yi ge dou bu neng shao'' directed by Zhang Yimou. Eyes Wide Shut
''Eyes Wide Shut'' is a 1999 erotic mystery psychological drama film directed, produced, and co-written by Stanley Kubrick. It is based on the 1926 novella '' Traumnovelle'' (''Dream Story'') by Arthur Schnitzler, transferring the story's setting from early twentieth-century Vienna to 1990s New York City. The plot centers on a doctor (Tom Cruise) who is shocked when his wife (Nicole Kidman) reveals that she had contemplated having an affair a year earlier. He then embarks on a night-long adventure, during which he infiltrates a masked orgy of an unnamed secret society. Kubrick obtained the filming rights for ''Dream Story'' in the 1960s, considering it a perfect text for a film adaptation about sexual relations. He revived the project in the 1990s when he hired writer Frederic Raphael to help him with the adaptation. Jang Sun-woo (born 20 March 1952) is a South Korean film director. Life Jang attended Seoul National University and received a bachelor's degree in anthropology. Before his directorial debut, Jang made a name for himself by writing film criticism and scripts. His first film, ''Seoul Jesus'' (1986), based on one of his scripts, was noted for its "sarcasm and pronounced realism." ''Lies'' ( 거짓말, ''Gojitmal'') is a South Korean erotic drama film adapted from the banned novel ''Tell me a Lie'' by Jang Jung Il, which depicts a sadomasochistic sexual relationship between a 38-year-old sculptor and an 18-year-old highschool student. The film was shot in a semi-cinéma vérité style and features interviews with the author and cast spliced in between scenes. Intended to provoke, the film contains full-frontal nudity, unsimulated sex, coprophilia, and criticisms of South Korean society.
