5th Missouri Infantry Regiment (Union, 3 Years)
The 5th Missouri Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 5th Missouri Infantry Regiment was organized at St. Louis in March 1862 It was constructed by Major General Henry W. Halleck's consolidation of 5th United States Reserve Corps, Gerster's Pioneer Company, Winkelman's Pontoneer Company and Voerster's Company of Sappers and Miners. The regiment had a quiet war, performing garrison duty and patrolling within Missouri. Their first mission was guarding bridges on St. Louis & Iron Mountain Railroad and patrolling in southeast Missouri until July. Company "F" was detailed in the District of Mississippi in July. The rest of the regiment was transferred to Cape Girardeau until November, 1862. In November the regiment was disassembled. The Gerster's Independent Company of Pioneers was an independent company of military engineers that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The Company was organized in St. Louis, Missouri organized under the authority of Major General John C. Frémont. The unit was organized by Captain Anton Gerster, a professional engineer and a veteran of the 1848-48 Hungarian War of Independence. During the American Civil War, Missouri was a hotly contested border state populated by both Union and Confederate sympathizers. It sent armies, generals, and supplies to both sides, maintained dual governments, and endured a bloody neighbor-against-neighbor intrastate war within the larger national war. The 27th Missouri Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 27th Missouri Infantry Regiment was organized at St. Louis, Missouri, September 2, 1862 through January 3, 1863 and mustered in for three years service under the command of Colonel Thomas Curley. The regiment was attached to District of Rolla, Department of Missouri, to March 1863. 1st Brigade, 1st Division, XV Corps, Army of the Tennessee, to June 1865. The regiment mustered out June 13, 1865. The Voerster's Independent Company of Sappers and Miners was an independent company of military engineers that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The Company was organized in St. Louis, Missouri under the authority of Major General John C. Frémont. The company was intended to provide engineering and pioneer support to the Army of the West operating at that time in the state of Missouri. While the company was subsequently consolidated with other organizations, it appears to have continued to carry out specialized engineering functions, at least thought the end of 1862 and possibly later.
