34th Berlin International Film Festival
The 34th annual Berlin International Film Festival was held from 17–28 February 1984. The festival opened with ''The Noah's Ark Principle'' by Roland Emmerich. The Golden Bear was awarded to the American film '' Love Streams'' directed by John Cassavetes. The retrospective was dedicated to German-American actor, screenwriter, producer and film director Ernst Lubitsch. The Honorary Golden Bear was awarded to American director Jules Dassin and Greek actress Melina Mercouri and the Homage section was dedicated to the couple. The Noah's Ark Principle
''The Noah's Ark Principle'' (german: Das Arche Noah Prinzip) is a 1984 West German science fiction film written and directed by Roland Emmerich as his thesis at the Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film München (HFF). While his fellow students typically raised and spent 20,000 Deutsche Mark for their final work, Emmerich managed to collect a budget of 1,200,000 DM (around US$600,000). This film, shot in color with mono sound, received a rating of 12 in West Germany, and was sold to 20 countries. It was submitted to the 34th Berlin International Film Festival and received some acclaim for technical skill and special effects, but won no prizes. Lana Gogoberidze
Lana Gogoberidze ( ka, ლანა ღოღობერიძე) (born October 13, 1928, Tbilisi) is a Georgian film director and politician. Educated at Tbilisi State University and Moscow State University of Cinematography, Gogoberidze headed Director's Studio at the Rustaveli Theatre School, Tbilisi, in 1975. She was elected to the Parliament of Georgia from 1992 to 1995. In 2004, she served as Georgia's Ambassador to France. Gogoberidze's fiction and documentary movies have won several international awards. Her film '' Day Is Longer Than Night'' was entered into the 1984 Cannes Film Festival. Allen Fong Yuk-ping (方育平) (born July 10, 1947) is a film director and one of the leaders of the Hong Kong New Wave of the late 1970s and early 1980s. His cinematic style is highly influenced by Italian neorealism. He also usually uses personal or real-life stories as the basis for his films. ''Adolphe'' is a classic French novel by Benjamin Constant, first published in 1816. It tells the story of an alienated young man, Adolphe, who falls in love with an older woman, Ellénore, the Polish mistress of the Comte de P***.
